RYA Power Boat Level 2

This course suits those new to boating who want to develop the base skills as well as those who have boated for a while but who want to ensure they are approaching their boating the right way.

No prior experience is necessary to enrol in an RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. This course is designed for beginners and covers basic boat handling and safety skills.

Participants are typically required to bring appropriate clothing for boating, including a waterproof jacket and trousers, suitable footwear with non-slip soles although clothing is dependant on weather.

For most (but not all courses) customers booking and paying for two people receive a discount amounting to roughly 2.5% whilst those booking three or more people will enjoy a discount amounting to roughly 5% – see tables above. Favourable rates are also usually available to sailing Clubs and Charities booking individuals onto courses
There are two way this course works i) As a stand alone course for adults/children ii) For children being trained with their parents where their parents are on a ‘higher’ course. This course works really well for children training alongside Adults. The costs shown here are an indicator as if (for example) we are running a Dayskipper Practical course for three of you on your motor cruiser for 4 days then if your 2 children join us for 2 days to achieve their SMC then there will not be additional costs. We suggest we always discuss this option ahead of the course starting to agree whether it is a suitable option and to agree the cost.
‘One to one’ courses give you exclusive use of the vessel during your course but unless we agree otherwise with you the classroom/afloat elements of the course may run alongside other similar courses that are running.
Prices quoted for both practical and shorebased training assume that you are based in the Poole/Solent area. Travel further afield is no problem whatsoever but may be chargeable. This will be agreed with you fully before booking if relevant.
RYA Fees are subject to change each year by the RYA. The fees quoted are correct at the time of writing but may change. If you are a RYA member you may not have to pay some of these fees.
Fuel will be charged at cost. Powerboat and Motor Cruiser Charter: The charter rate for the RIBs and the motor cruiser when used for bespoke training assume a limited distance is travelled. Additional fuel will be charged at cost.
The price for these courses includes us making an Instructor available to discuss any problems by phone that you are having with any aspects of the course. Classroom time if required would need to be charged at the noted rates.
The RYA offer a ‘Fast Track’ service for those that need certificates or licences processing very quickly. The fast-track service can be used either by callers-in-person to RYA House or by post, and they undertake to turn the certificate around in 2 working days (often less) and post back to you first class. This service can be used for ICCs, SRCs (VHF), Commercial Endorsements, Yachtmaster Certificates and Instructor Qualifications. The fee for this service is £38 to non-members, £21 to Pathway/Personal/Associate members, £16 to Accredited members and £10 to Gold members in addition to the standard processing fee. PTUK will handle this process on your behalf if you wish sending your application to the RYA by registered post on the next business day. This costs £25 irrespective of the number of certificates that we are sending.
Replacement certificates or those which are reissued where a restriction is lifted (eg a child’s certificate when they reach 16) are only available from the RYA direct and cost £20. (Free for Gold and Life members). For some certificates we may need to reissue the certificate and this costs £25 including postage (for the UK, overseas locations will be costed separately) for Powerboat and Motor Cruising Certificates. Some shorebased course certificates may cost more where there is a need for us to purchase a ‘RYA Training Pack’ in which the certificate is packaged. Of course replacement certificates will only be issued to those that we have trained and who appear on our database.

The RYA Advanced Powerboat Course aims to increase your:

boat handling ability
seamanship skills
pilotage / passage planing, with charts and electronic aids
take control of a planing powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters.

Course Highlights

Advanced Powerboat Handling: Take your manoeuvring skills to the next level, turning in a confined space, negotiating berthing in all situations, mastering highspeed turns, operating in rough weather and challenging conditions.
Navigation Skills: Enhance your understanding of navigation principles with longer passage plans, night navigation and a digital approach to navigation with the use of electronic aids.

Required experience

Candidates should be competent to the level of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a knowledge of the navigation and chartwork to the level of Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased certificate.

Pre-requisites

It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operators certificate.

The majority of this course is spent afloat however some elements, specifically navigation, are classroom based. Depending on the time of year the course will go on into the evening / night.

The I.C.C. can be gained via a direct assessment (0.5 - 1 day or via a 2 day RYA Powerboat Level 2 course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

The Power Boat Level II is an essential course for deck crew working in the superyacht industry. It is also advisable for steward/stewardesses, and engineers to hold a powerboat license. This two-day entry-level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat in a safe and effective manner. The powerboat level II is a requirement for crew wishing to drive a superyacht tender up to 10m.

Course Breakdown

The majority of the course is practical with a short theory classroom session. The theory learning will continue during the practical training and assessment. The powerboat level II usually takes two days to complete, weather permitting. The topics covered are as follows:

Southampton Water, Hampshire, UK; 7th July 2018; Hamble Lifeboat RHIB at speed With Three Men on board

Confined space maneuvering
Man overboard procedure
Engine checks
High-speed handling
Collision regulations

Powerboat Level 2 Certificate Outcome:

Apart from providing a strong base upon which powerboat handling skills can be built, the powerboat level 2 course is the basis for the ICC (International certificate of competence). A commercially endorsed power boat level II certificate can be used to transport guests and passengers, in tenders up to 10m in length.

The RYA Powerboat level II certificate does not have an expiry date.

Certificates of Competence

RYA Advanced Powerboat Exam

Full details of the exam syllabus and requirements are shown in the RYA's Powerboat Logbook (code G20) available from the webshop.

Boats used for exams

You may use your own boat or a boat that you have chartered or borrowed. You will be responsible for ensuring the boat is seaworthy and suitable for the area in which the exam takes place and equipped as shown below.

The vessel must be capable of a minimum of 12 knots, equipped with the following:

lights conforming with IRPCS
VHF radio (may be portable)
GPS (may be hand held) or plotter
depth sounder
anchor, chain and warp
basic tool kit and spares
heaving line
paddles or additional means of propulsion
flares: 2 hand held, 2 orange smoke
bilge pump or buckets/bailer
first aid kit

Additionally if not on the boat, you will need to bring to the exam:

laminated or waterproof charts
GPS set (may be hand held)
tide tables
pilotage information for the local area, eg pilot books, port information etc
plotting instruments.
Photographic ID card or document, such as a passport or driving licence

Advanced Powerboat exam pre-requisites

	Documented minimum sea time completed on a seagoing powerboat in the last 10 years:
	Knowledge to the level of Yachtmaster Offshore theory
	Practical

	1 Candidate: 4 to 5 hours 2 candidates: 5 to 6 hours 3 candidates: 6 to 7 hours No more than three candidates can be examined in one session.
	17 at the time of the exam

Before you book your exam please check that you:

can provide a boat
have completed the required mileage and experience as skipper
hold a VHF Radio Operators License or Short Range Certificate
hold a valid first aid certificate
have read the syllabus in RYA publication G20
have read and comply with the pre-requisites above.

Candidates should be familiar with all the equipment on board the vessel, as they may be asked to use this during the examination.

If you need your Certificate of Competence in order to work on board a commercial craft subject the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed .

Adding Extra Sessions

Members who purchase any of the pre-paid packages will have the relevant session credit applied to their account, which can then be used to book sessions.

Once you have used your pre-paid sessions, you can book additional sessions on a PAYG basis at PAYG standard prices.

U nused Package Sessions

If you renew your membership within one month of the original expiry date, you will be able to carry any unused sessions over to your new membership. If you do not renew your membership, any unused sessions will be lost.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is a great and easy start in maritime navigation. It teaches the basic skills of powerboat handling and safety. The PB2 license allows crew members drive superyacht tenders and advance their career at sea. The course is highly recommended for both deckhands and stewards/stewardesses entering the superyacht industry.

About the course

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two-day comprehensive course that we run in the picturesque area of Golfe-Juan, next to Antibes in the South of France. The course has both theoretical and practical aspects to it and covers all aspects of power boating, boat handling, safety and pilotage.

The practical training for this course is carried out on the 6.5m Capelli tender.

The RYA Powerboat Level Two certificates are recognized by the UK Coastguard and are used as a Tender License on board larger yachts.

Getting ready for the course

In winter, make sure to keep your feet warm with deck shoes. In summer, you are welcome to come barefoot. The RYA Start Powerboating handbook should be read befor joining the class. We advise you to look up online useful knots . . All the knots you need to learn are mentioned in the hand book.

With little or no prior knowledge of being on a RIB, the two-day RYA Powerboat Level 2 course will give you the building blocks you need to start your journey.

With training from qualified RYA instructors on board our boat, this 2 day beginner / novice friendly course runs all year round at our RYA Training Centre with immediate access to the open water of the Solent

What we cover on the course:

This course is perfect for when you go on holiday and hire a small powerboat to nip from port to port, or explore those secluded beaches and bays in those hot climates.

This course teaches the basics of boat handling, safety and navigation, and skills at planing speed.

The Powerboat Level 2 course gives you a comprehensive grounding and a good skill-set that will put you in good stead to skipper a powerboat on your next boating trip.

Our RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses have a ratio of three students to one Instructor.

During the course you will cover:

Collision regulations and rules of the road
Knowledge of safety equipment
Turning in confined spaces and close quarter handling
Coming alongside a pontoon and securing to a mooring buoy

In the UK or abroad with the Powerboat level 2, it will allow you to convert the certificate into the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which is what you need to charter a boat outside of the UK.

It’s the perfect course for getting into boating and putting a toe in the water.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Unlike the Level 1 and 2 qualifications, the Intermediate Powerboat course requires previous powerboat experience. You may have completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course, or you may have an equivalent level of experience.

Many of our students also find that some of the theory courses help them to better understand some of the more technical elements of the course. If you have completed the RYA VHF, RYA First Aid or RYA Day Skipper theory course, you will find that you are able to put into practice some of the information that you have learned on the Intermediate Powerboat course.

Due to the more technical nature of this course compared to others, we have set a minimum age for students on the Intermediate Powerboat course of 16 years old.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The RYA Intermediate Powerboat course will give you the opportunity to plan a cruise by daytime. You will have the opportunity to participate in two cruises – one by traditional methods of navigation and the other by GPS.

During this course you will have the opportunity to develop your existing safety and boat handling to the standard required for longer passages in more complex scenarios.

OUTLINE COURSE CONTENT

Subjects covered will include chart work, tides, compass rose, weather, position fixing, navigation by GPS, methods of navigation at high speed, pile moorings, manoeuvring in locks, and a range of man overboard methods.

As some of the most highly commended power boat courses in the UK, the RYA powerboat courses practice techniques, manoeuvres and best practices to keep you safe.

WHAT DOES THE COURSE COST?

This course is £325.00 per person for two days of training with a qualified RYA instructor. Due to the size of our RIBs, all our courses take place in small groups, with a maximum group size of 3. Alternatively, to ensure that you get the maximum amount of time to practice and learn, we can run this course on a one to one basis at a cost of £810 plus VAT.

It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

If you need a Powerboat Advanced certificate in order to work on board a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed.
