The story of Swan yachts in Finland: will there be cygnets

Elaine Bunting reports from the ice-bound coast of Finland, where Nautor’s Swan build their famous range of luxurious Swan yachts, including the latest Swan 115

First of the Swan 115s

Back in the BTC sheds, the work on the first of the 115s progresses. The deck is fitted, the twin rudders are in place, the engine is installed, as is the huge propshaft and massive Hundested controllable-pitch propeller, a work of art all of itself. The crew will arrive before the launch to familiarise themselves with the yacht and systems and, when the sea thaws, the first of Swan’s biggest superyacht will be launched and sail south on her maiden voyage.

Since modern glassfibre yachts began to be built here almost half a century ago, yachts have grown in size and complexity. Only a handful of brands worldwide have survived these changes. But Nautor’s Swan was never a mass producer of yachts; the company has built an average of 10-15 a year, and of the 2,000 or so Swans ever made, over 95 per cent are still sailing.

How the company can preserve these attributes and increase the volume of boatbuilding is the question for modern times. As gratifying as it is to be in demand as a creator of superyachts, the Swan line needs its diversity. Enrico Chieffi, former Olympic sailor, top helmsman and after 17 years at Nautor’s Swan now its vice president, thinks there are lessons from premium car makers.

Many of these have learned that they can produce greater volumes without tarnishing their brands, and this in turn provides economies of scale to develop new models.

“If you look at most luxury car builders,” he says, “they have decided to develop a small range. That’s where we’ve come from: the 36, 42 and 48. I believe this will come back and there is room for these sizes. There is a huge market of wealthy people who want a boat they can sail in their home waters and they are looking for high-quality yachts.”

At the moment, the smallest Swan in the range is the older, classic Swan 53. But at 45ft or below, Chieffi says, “handcraft is not suited and we would need a completely different mindset on the industrial process”.

Nautor’s Swan is, he hints, exploring the possibility of a sister brand. “We are one of the brands with the widest product range, from 50-115ft, but also this is not very efficient. So the step could be to double the range. There could be another brand within the Nautor Holding Group, to take advantage of existing investments.”

What this range will be he will not say, only that “the next very important project in the company is being developed now”. The story of Swan may be about to take another turn. The superyachts are soon to take flight. Are there some cygnets on the way?

Famous Swans

Sayula II . Mexican businessman Ramón Carlin won the first Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race (1973-74) in this production Swan 65. She took 152 days to sail 32,500 nautical miles and was one of the few yachts to have a freezer and full-time cook on board.

King’s Legend . The Swan 65 sloop raced in the Whitbread in 1977/78, crewed among others by Skip Novak, as navigator. She came 2nd, behind Conny can Rietschoten’s Flyer . King’s Legend is owned by Dutch sailor Gijs van Liebergen, who has lovingly restored her and charters the yacht.

Design and build

• Sparkman & Stephens designed approximately the first 1,000 Swans to launch, from 1966 to 1978.
• Ron Holland was the designer from 1978 to 1981 and since then German Frers has been responsible for the design of more than 700 Swans.
• The most popular model to date has been the Swan 38, of which 116 were built between 1974 and 1979.

Nautor is probably the most iconic yacht manufacturer in Finland. Here is a short introduction to the history of Nautor’s Swan yacht lineup as seen by some of the people that made Nautor happen as well as some more recent glimpses of the yachts from Nautor’s 50th anniversary regatta in July 2016 in Turku.

Nautor was not born in a vacuum, a number of other boat yards had been building wooden racer/cruisers based on Sparkman and Stephens designs. Many of these yachts are still sailing in Finland. In the first video, Lars Ström, former design office manager at Nautor, discusses the role of S&S designs in Finland at around the time when Nautor was born.

The history of Nautor started in 1966. The role of Pekka Koskenkylä, the founder of Nautor, is ofcourse undisputable, but one other person played a particularly important role. That person was Heinz Ramm-Schmidt, a Finnish industrialist and avid sailor. Ramm-Schmidt became Koskenkylä’s first customer. In the next video, Heinz Ramm-Schmidt (95 years old at the time of shooting the video) remembers how he became Nautor’s first customer.

The boat that Ramm-Schmidt ordered was the Swan 36. Koskenkylä did not make an idle promised when he told Ramm-Schmidt that he would build 100 boats, 90 Swan 36 were built and the model is still one of Nautor’s all time best sellers. Both the original Swan 36 as well as Ramm-Schmidt’s second boat, the Tarantella II are still very much going strong today. Tarantella II is even still in the family and is being successfully sailed by Heinz’s son Leif.

In the next video, you can enjoy a bit of sailing zen on-board one of the earliest Swan 36’s, the Swan 36-014 Kajas. The video is shot during the pre-race for the Nautor 50th Anniversary regatta.

After the 36, the Nautor fleet quickly grew to include a growing range of bigger and bigger yachts. One of the reason for the success of the Swan’s was their technical quality. In the next video Lars Ström explores technical design aspects of the early Swans.  Lars Ström has earned the nickname “professor Ström” for his deep knowledge of all aspects of the Swan yachts and as you can see from the video, he indeed deserves the title.

Despite it’s age, a large part of the Swans ever built are still sailing. With some boats having seen up to 50 years of use, some of them are now experiencing a second life after extensive renovations. In some cases it is almost impossible to believe that the boats have logged so many nautical miles and years. Here is one of the proud owners of a newly renovated Swan, Charles Hill from the UK and happy owner of Runn, a Swan 43 launched in 1969.

Swan 88 hybrid yacht launched in Finland

Developed with Torqeedo, the first Swan 88 splashed in Pietarsaari, with the model scheduled to debut at Cannes in September.

Nautor Swan has launched the Swan 88, the Finnish shipyard’s first yacht to feature hybrid electric propulsion, which was developed in collaboration with Torqeedo . Featuring an overall length of 26.54m and a beam of 6.79m (22ft 3in), the performance superyacht was moved out of her shed at the Boatbuilding Technology Centre and craned into the water at the House of Swan in Pietarsaari.

Giovanni Pomati, Nautor Group’s CEO, said: “The Swan 88 marks an important milestone for the shipyard’s production. It’s the first hybrid propulsion yacht, which has seen a constant collaboration with Torqeedo and has contributed to the study and development of the same features across the entire range, not just maxi yachts. 

“This important new model represents Swan’s 360-degree essence, the DNA that for 58 years has made our boats recognisable worldwide, and we’re very proud of it.”

The hull and deck are full carbon-fibre epoxy construction, utilising the benefits of Sprint® lamination technology together with the yard’s proprietary advanced carbon mould technology.

The Swan 88 was designed by the shipyard’s regular collaborators: German Frers for naval architecture, Misa Poggi for interior design, and Lucio Micheletti of Micheletti + Partners for exterior styling.

The new model’s innovations include the shape of the coachroof, “inspired by the wind with the essential and dynamic lines enhanced”, as well as a transom featuring a ‘beach club’ swim platform. The natural light flooding in from the atrium-style companionway as well as the coachroof and hull windows provide bright interiors.

Despite its LOA, the performance maxi satisfies the sub-24m load line rule for compliance to the light MCA charter regulations, giving owners the opportunity to earn charter income while reducing running and management costs. The appendages dedicated to cruising are a moderate draught fin T-keel of 4m and twin rudders, which reduce draught and increase safety and balance.

Joining the 98, 100, 108, 120 and 128 in the Swan Maxi line, the Swan 88 will make her worldwide debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 10-15 before appearing at the superyacht-focused Monaco Yacht Show from September 25-28. Swan recently appointed Simpson Marine as its exclusive agent for Asia .

First look: Interiors of first Swan 108 sailing yacht Fancy revealed

Nautor Swan has released all-new interior imagery of its first Swan 108 sailing yacht Fancy . This follows the 35-metre model's successful sea trials in July, at the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland. 

The Swan 108 is an evolution of the current Maxi yacht line, featuring modified exterior styling by Micheletti + Partners and naval architecture by German Frers . Interior configurations and styling have been devised by Misa Poggi and aim to provide owners and guests with "air, light and space".

"I choose light colours to give an idea of breadth and dark colours for a more intimate atmosphere. Everything should give the idea of being immersed in a bright space in perfect harmony with the outside," continued Poggi. Renderings reveal a warm colour palette of cream and brown, with soft backlighting and merlot furniture accents. The main saloon is arranged with a plush U-shaped settee, coffee table with ottoman seating and an eight-person dining table adjacent. 

One of the most important evolutions of the Swan 108 is its dual-acting transom door, which sees the stern open along with part of the aft deck to create a generous waterfront beach club. According to the yard, the solution allows double the space than on comparable Maxis, while also allowing easier tender operations.

Other smart design choices include widened coamings on the aft part of the cockpit, allowing an alternative outboard position for steering stations without compromising on helm protection.

Described as a "proper bluewater yacht", the Swan 108 is designed with moderate freeboards like its fellow Swan sailing yachts, offering "great comfort" in rough seas and the ability to handle "gently in waves".

The Swan 108 also guarantees owners simple and efficient sail systems, with in-boom furling for those looking to cruise or a racing square top mainsail for owners planning to compete in international regattas.

“The Swan 108 marks a new era in the Swan Maxi range at Nautor,” said Giovanni Pomati, Nautor Group CEO. “The project, launched in 2021 during the Regate di Primavera in Portofino, has been like drawing a beautiful painting. Like a painter meticulously chooses his palette, we made a very intense research of talents that were able to put on the table their know-how and blend it with the other, to create a beautiful and unique product.”

Construction on the second unit is already underway in Finland. According to BOATPro , Nautor Swan has a total of four yachts currently under construction – including a unit from its second-largest series, the Swan 128.

The motor yachts by Nautor Swan

The architect

This new design was created practically simultaneously with the Swan 78 as a complement to the larger sister of the new bluewater line of yachts. The size seems to be a very popular one. It allows space for a permanent crew with minimum length. The design philosophy and parameters follow the same concepts as the larger version. This smaller yacht has one less cabin in the Owner’s party than the larger 78 but shares the same saloon in the OF and OA versions developed. In order to give the saloon a feeling of space, the galley is located forward behind an open partition with a direct view to the deckhouse front window. Her medium light displacement hull is powerful and beamy giving very good form stability and a nice motion at sea. The hull shape and parameters, especially the prismatic coefficient have been optimiwed for fast all round performance in light to medium wind ranges within a modern wide stern envelope.

The steering system includes twin rudders for positive easy control in all circumstances, and there are a number of draft options for fixed and lifting keels offered. She will be a fun boat to own and sail the waters of the world, and because of her advanced design she is expected to have a long successful life. She is modern but at the same time we have strived to conserve the softness and harmony of the her earlier relatives, avoiding hard unruly behaviour. The same can be said of the aesthetics, she is new, clean and modern, without being tied up to any short lived fashion. The same could be said of the deck with its modern design, uncluttered surfaces and straightforward, simple solutions to sail handling and life at sea.

Featuring 360-degree windows is the latest evolution of Frers’ design and combining curved lines and multifaceted surfaces, it looks slim and elegant like a typical wedge Swan coachroof while as practical and panoramic as a raised saloon. If there is an obvious family feeling with the Swan 78, Frers has designed the Swan 65 with markedly elegant and discreet lines, with faceted edges that create even lighter volumes. The aftwards position of the mast – that derives from the most up-to-date concepts in sail plan design – means that it has been integrated in the coachroof, with obvious advantages both in looks and in interior volumes. The cockpit is organised with the typical Swan layout. The forward section is dedicated to guests, well protected by the sprayhood and bimini, and has a table for alfresco dining and entertaining. This area can be offered in two configurations: more open and sporting, with seamless seating and full length table, and more cosy and protected, with surrounding seats and integrated sunbathing area. This layout also provides more interior space, with the owners’ suite aft.

The central area of the cockpit is dedicated to the handling of the yacht, with five powered winches all of the same size, positioned close to the two helm stations, for better handling with limited crew but enough space for a complete racing crew to work efficiently. The transom is curved towards the large opening bathing platform, dedicated to the sun and the sea, with areas that are designed to accommodate cushions and bathing towels. The opening transom also reveals the access to the garage, which can accommodate tenders up to 2.80 m. At the bow, the forepeak is accessed through a large hatchway that leads down to a generous volume that can be optionally converted into crew quarters with separate heads, and still provide substantial stowage space.

The interiors are offered in two different versions, Owner Forward and Owner Aft, plus various options for the arrangement of bunks, crew quarters and navigation area, making the Swan 65 one of the most flexible yachts on the market, always providing the right solution for the owner’s needs and requirements. The day area remains unchanged and features a five-metre-long saloon, a raised panoramic living area with dining to port and a lounge to starboard. Systems and tanks are recessed under the flooring in the deepest part of the hull, yet are easily accessible; two steps down there is large C shaped galley, well organised for use under sail, and the navigation station, with a dinette layout or, optionally, a traditional chart table with a column for all the electronics and additional stowage for various domestic appliances. In the OF version, there is the large master cabin forward with an island bunk accessible from three sides, and two twin guest cabins aft, each with its own bathroom and separate shower. Two layouts are available here: two single or one double bunk, the latter completely accessible from the side.

The OA version, ideal for those who prefer long crossings, has the guest cabins forward and a full beam owners’ suite aft. In this version room has been made for a workshop in front of of the engine room, which is positioned at full height under the stepway, separated from generators and other equipment. In both versions two alternative solutions are provided for crew quarters: at the bow, or forward of the galley. Both have separate heads. The finish in European Oak and the elegant design, well thought out for long navigations, are touches of the high Nautor standards that have made Swans world famous
