BEYOND THE BEACH: Roots run deep in this corner of Weymouth

View of Kings Cover Beach in the Wessagusset section of North Weymouth, Thursday, June 21, 2012.

Editor's note: As the Ledger celebrates its 175th anniversary, we look at some of the places that have defined the South Shore over the years.

Wessagusset in North Weymouth is the second-oldest settlement in Massachusetts, founded two years after the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth.

It boasts a beach, but today there are also neighborhoods of modest homes, an elementary school with a playground, a ball field, a memorial garden and a yacht club.

The Wessagussett Yacht Club – the name ends with a double “t” in some spellings – boasts more than 200 members, including many families, said dock master John Yarosh, who has lived in North Weymouth for 15 years.

“That’s what I like about this place – it’s all families. Kids get to go run around,” club secretary Ruth Ann Whitten said.

“It’s pretty here,” resident Deirdre McCue, 49, said. “There are beautiful sunsets, and the people are nice.”

In 1622, London entrepreneur Thomas Weston planned the colony on the Fore River, which the Indians called Wessagusset. His idea was to make money on beaver skins, fish and timber.

The settlement was short-lived. On April 6, 1623, Myles Standish and several other men killed four Indians, some of whom were accused of stealing their corn and plotting attacks. The “massacre” triggered more violence in which several Indians and settlers were killed.

In the 1830s, workers on Sea Street found the remains of two beheaded Indians. The area is now a memorial garden. An inscription says the garden stones are dedicated as “symbols of hope that the souls of the souls of the first inhabitants of Wessagussett, Massachusetts Indians and first settlers of Weymouth, the Weston Colonists, have reconciled their differences and found peace.”

The Wessagusset area was recognized as part of Weymouth when 21 new families settled there in 1635.

Wessagusset Colony fell apart in less than a year due to lack of preparation and fights with the Indians.

Seven skulls from skirmishes between the original colonists and the local Indians were found at 43 Bicknell Road. The home there is rumored to be haunted by a giant Indian.

Early Weymouth is the “spiritual grandfather” of today’s town hall meetings because it was one of the few early settlements governed by the people, unlike Plymouth and Boston.
