The coolest yacht and car collaborations

Automotive design on the water is far from a novel concept. Superyacht designers have been borrowing ideas from the car world for years, often citing the curve of a wheel arch or swept-back profile of a sportscar as inspiration. But when car marques team up with shipyards, a new breed of crossover emerges. We take a look at the coolest yacht-car collaborations in recent years...

Frauscher X Porsche

Automotive giant Porche has entered the electric boat market in an exclusive collaboration with Austrian boatbuilder Frauscher. The 8.67-metre-long day cruiser is based on the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air but equipped with the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) drive technology of the future Porsche Macan. This includes a lithium-ion high voltage battery with a total capacity of around 100 kWh, a permanently excited synchronous electric motor (PSM) of the latest generation and the related power electronics. Thanks to the 800-volt technology from Porsche, the electric boat can be charged at DC fast-charging stations, with AC charging also possible.

Like the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air with a conventional drivetrain, the electric version accommodates up to nine passengers. Design highlights include a rear swimming platform, a generous lounge area with sun pads and a premium sound system. Porsche will play a significant role in the design of the seats and upholstery.

Delivery of a first edition of 25 units is anticipated for 2024 with the option to preorder already available.

Candela X Polestar: C-8

With the electric performance car brand Polestar already supplying battery technology to the hydrofoil electric boat builder Candela , this merging of these Swedish innovators isn’t a surprise. The trailblazers have teamed up to create a limited edition version of its popular foiling Candela C-8.

Design maintains that of the existing hydrofoil design but is now paired with the carmaker’s refined palette of colour and materials, including a light grey hue for the hull, seat upholstery that mirrors contemporary car interiors, and hydrofoils finished in iconic Swedish gold. The C-8 has a range of around 57 nautical miles and cruises at an impressive 22 knots.

“Candela’s hydrofoil technology is a paradigm shift for sustainable performance in the marine industry. Like the first time driving an electric car, you instantly feel that this is the future when the boat ‘takes off’ – and now with the special gold details that we so proudly exhibit on our cars,” said Maximilian Missoni, head of design at Polestar.

BMW X TYDE: The Icon

The iconic German car brand BMW teamed up with the tech start-up TYDE to unveil a 13.5-metre foiling boat dubbed The Icon . The flat trimaran-style hull with its transparent "prism-like" superstructure and angular and pointed lines turned heads at its debut in this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The battery-powered boat, sourced from BMW's innovative i3, provides 240kWh of power to a pair of 100kW motors, enabling a range of up to 50 nautical miles and a top speed of 30 knots. Hydrofoil technology from Tyde has been used to reduce energy requirements by up to 80 per cent, avoiding drag and increasing range.

BMW has integrated its authentic touches throughout the boat resulting in a standout cabin experience. The car giant took inspiration from its high-end cars delivering an onboard 'soundscape' composed by Hans Zimmer through a Dolby Atmos system. While the BMW-designed helming station comprises a sole digital control unit with a 32-inch touch unit with 6k resolution designed to look and feel like the BMW iDrive operating system. Although a one-off, The Icon showcases the potential and future of electric vessels and collaborations between road and sea.

Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63

Born out of a partnership between the two Italian brands, The Italian Sea Group and Automobili Lamborghini, this sports car inspired 19.2-metre pocket superyacht combines a lightweight boat design with supercar expertise.

The futuristic and sporty design profile with an aerodynamic hardtop has been inspired by the hybrid Lamborghini Sian FKP 37. Meaning “flash of lightning” in Italian, it is the fastest model in the Tecnomar fleet, reaching a top speed of 60 knots thanks to a pair of MAN V-12 2000hp engines.

Meanwhile, inside, the interior boasts clean lines, hexagonal shapes, and Italian-made materials. The bridge controls and navigational panels have been inspired by sportscar cockpits, with a helm styled to look like a car steering wheel.

The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 references the year the supercar brand was established and marks its first foray into the yachting world. Since its launch, the brand has delivered two 63 models to clients.

Axopar X Brabus: Shadow 900 series

Finnish dayboat specialist Axopar teamed up with the German car manufacturer Brabus to produce a series of high-power day boats. The link between the two companies was formally announced at the 2018 Dusseldorf Boat Show, and since then, they have continued their legacy building on this Shadow series.

At this year's Boot, they unveiled the latest Stealth Green Signature edition of its Shadow 900 series. The 11.2-metre lean, green machines are powered by two Mercury Marine 450R 4.6-liter V8 four-stroke racing engines, with a combined output of 900hp; the dayboat can reach eye-watering speeds of up to 60 knots.

Aside from the ease in speed, other features inspired by the Brabus supercars are the clean and sleek helming area with futuristic elements such as fingertip controls, backlit switches, touchscreen technology and a multifunctional steering wheel. Additional comfort and luxury are showcased by the leather upholstery and lashings of carbon fibre throughout. The integrated entertainment system is completed with a 42-inch flat-screen TV and Apple TV connectivity.

This new edition comes after the launch of the Black Ops and Deep Blue Signature models in 2022. The Shadow 900 models are available in various configurations, including the fully open Spyder version, the Sun-Top, a fully enclosed XC-Cross Cabin - dubbed the SUV of the sea - and a fully enclosed cruiser.

Dynamiq X Porsche: GTT 115

Dynamiq makes no secret of its automotive inspiration when the yard launched its debut superyacht, Jetsetter in 2016. Charging ahead of the yacht-car collaborations in size and scope is  Dynamiq and one of the biggest names in the automotive industry, Porsche, with the Dynamiq GTT 115.

The 35-metre all-aluminium superyacht, now named Jaaber , was first unveiled at the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show. It is hull number one in a limited edition of run of models designed by Studio F.A Porsche , Dynamiq and Vripack. The subtlety of the renowned German car manufacturer's DNA is found spanning across three decks, including the Pepita houndstooth fabrics similar to those found on the Porsche 911 R edition sportscar.

Roland Heiler, managing director of Studio F.A Porsche said: "Taking the spirit of high-performance sportscar styling to the high seas, the Dynamiq GTT 115 is designed to appeal to car lovers and forward-thinking yacht owners who appreciate the advantages of speed, style and our philosophy of intelligent performance."

Power is from a pair of 1,650hp MAN V12 engines twinned to Fortjes pod drives and three variable speed generators enabling a top speed of around 21 knots and a cruising range of 3,400 nautical miles.

Riva X Ferrari

Timeless classics are found within both industries and this one was bought to life in the early 1990s through a collaboration between the legendary Riva and Ferrari. Only 40 units of this 9.6-metre boat were produced. Making the boat considerably rarer than many of the carmakers' most desirable supercars.

Thanks to the pair of Vulcano 390hp V8 engines, this limited edition run of speedboats can reach up to speeds in excess of 50 knots. The design elements inspired by the Ferrari Testarossa, include the side streaks and full-width slotted rear end.

Aside from the Rosso Corsa paint job, the supercar-inspired spoiler sitting above the cabin makes its bold statement. Meanwhile, inside the cabin of the boat, there is a leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel with yellow lettering and dials.

Bugatti X Palmer Johnson: Niniette 66

Famed for making the world’s fastest production sports car, the Veyron, the French manufacturer Bugatti joined forces with U.S. boat builder Palmer Johnson . Presenting this series of carbon fibre day boats, the name is a nod to the history of  Bugatti, Niniette was the nickname of the founder Ettore Bugatti's daughter.

Each Niniette gets its name from its length in feet. The 20-metre cruiser features a reversed, larger-than-usual sharp bow that widens to the hull sides. The main design feature comprising of a circular element, which resembles that of the Bugatti Chiron hypercar. Key features include a fire pit and a spa pool in the spacious main deck seating area and a double cabin below. In true car and yacht crossover style, there are a range of engine options allowing for top speeds of up to 44 knots.

Etienne Salomé, head of interior design at Bugatti, is delighted with the result, adding, "The Niniette is a genuine member of the Bugatti family. Even from a large distance when entering a port, the Niniette will always be recognised as a true Bugatti."

Mercedes-Benz X Silver Arrows Marine: Arrow 460-Granturismo

In the car world, it is common for a project to be in development for five years or so before the prototype is unveiled. In the boating world, no builder would tie up design capital that long, which makes this boat all the more intriguing. The idea was conceived in 2009 by Gorden Wagener, vice president of design for Daimler, Mercedes’ parent company. Mercedes has numerous design centres but the Advanced Design Centre for Mercedes-Benz Style on Italy’s Lake Como developed Wagener’s idea: what if Mercedes-Benz Style designed a boat? The Lake Como style gurus began sketching, borrowing liberally from Mercedes’ famous Silver Arrows racing cars of the 1930s and from the iconic 1954 gull wing 300 SL.

Soon the group expanded to include former automotive journalist and avid boater Paolo Bonaveri, and entrepreneurs Jacopo Spadolini and Ron Gibbs, who investigated the niche for an ultra-exclusive, innovative Med-style cruiser. They formed the UK-based company Silver Arrows Marine to build it and brought in Tommaso Spadolini and Martin Francis.

The dayboat concept was becoming multifunctional; they began to think of it as a grand touring car, a granturismo. The name stuck. On the technical side, Swiss composite expert Carboman pushed every element from skin laminates to the 3D engineering of the systems. At an overall length of just 14.2m, the R&D per centimetre is staggering. Like a car interior, everything is built-in, and storage, the head and mini galley are hidden away.

Fearless Yachts by Porsche Design

Fearless Yachts by Porsche Design

It was only a matter of time before German design studio Porsche was commissioned to create a luxury speedboat for Miami-based boat manufacturer Fearless Yachts . Its smooth, clean lines mimic its counterparts on land, and just as its name suggests, this audaciously bold yacht is perfect for exploring where no ship has sailed before. Every detail of the yacht has been configured with power and speed in mind, from its 550 horsepower engine to its ultra-sharp hull.

Mercedes-Benz Arrow460-Granturismo

Mercedes-Benz Arrow460-Granturismo

With a name as synonymous with luxury as Mercedes-Benz , all eyes were on the German luxury car manufacturer when it announced the unveiling of its yacht collaboration. The Arrow460-Granturismo motor yacht doesn’t disappoint. Combining the impeccable craftsmanship of luxury yacht manufacturer Silver Arrows Marine with the unmistakable style of the brand, Mercedes has extended its ingenuity to conquer the sea.

Mercedes-Benz Arrow460-Granturismo

Appropriately nicknamed “Silver Arrow of the Seas”, this strikingly beautiful forms of the yacht might lead one to mistake it for a majestic sea creature from afar. However, an up-close glance reveals that no detail has gone unnoticed. Smooth lines on the ship’s exterior reflect the classic contours of the iconic Mercedes, while its floor-to-ceiling eucalyptus-lined interior carries the seamless flow inwards.

With room for 10, a top-quality sound system, and built-in chilled wine storage, this yacht is perfect for entertaining. However, with an experience this special, you may be tempted to simply retract the windows, rev the engine, and set out onto the azure blue of the sea on a charter set for two.

Amazing things happen when great minds come together to push the boundaries of innovation, imagination, and luxury. If you find it difficult to decide on a favorite between cars and yachts, there’s no need—you can have both.

Lexus LY 650 sport yacht car yacht collaboration

Lexus is the latest automaker to plunge into the marine market, adding its name and design-think to a sleek new sports boat, the Lexus LY 650. But it’s not the first time a premium carmaker has collaborated on a luxury yacht. Here are five collaborations that definitely float our boat.

LEXUS LY 650

You’re looking at the new flagship of the Lexus lineup. Measuring 65 feet, this opulent sport yacht is being built in partnership with Wisconsin boatmaker Marquis-Larson. In 2017, Lexus stuck its toe in the water with the one-off 42-foot Lexus Sport Yacht Concept.

F.A. PORSCHE DYNAMIQ GTT 115

Those swoopy buttresses supporting the flybridge hardtop? Just like the roof supports on Porsche’s latest 911 Targa . The retro houndstooth design on the carpets and cushions? Same as you see in a 928 from the ’80s.

No surprise, since the styling of the 115-foot Dynamiq GTT 115 came from the drawing board of Studio F.A. Porsche. Just seven of these Italian-built hybrid-electric mini-superyachts are being offered, starting at $14 million.

There’s only one must-have option for your $2.99 million, 1,500 hp Bugatti Chiron hypercar: a Bugatti yacht. In 2015, Bugatti teamed up with Monaco superyacht builder Palmer Johnson to create the 2017-revealed Bugatti Niniette , a 66-foot cruise missile powered by twin 1,000 hp MAN diesels capable of punching it to a 44-knot max. But what sets it apart is the jaw-dropping styling, which echoes the sculpted profile of the Chiron. As for the price, if you have to ask…

RIVA LAMBORGHINI

Riva Aquarama yacht Lamborghini

Back in the Swinging ’60s, if you wanted to wow the crowds on the Côte d’Azur, the boat to own was a Riva Aquarama. Lamborghini founder Ferruccio Lamborghini felt the same and, in 1968, bought one, persuading Carlo Riva to fit a pair of 350 hp 4.0-liter V-12s from a Lamborghini 350 GT sports car. With a top speed of 48 knots, it became the speediest Aquarama ever. It’s now for sale with Dutch specialists Riva-World.

The perfect car match: To capture la dolce vita, it has to be a classic Lamborghini 350 GT coupe, built from 1964 to 1966. Expect to pay around $750,000 for a good one.

The Top New Luxury Cars in the World

From ludicrous supercars to luxurious SUVs, Alexandra Cheney picks her favorite new vehicles for the year ahead.

By Alexandra Cheney

New Luxury Cars

At the dawn of a fresh decade, premium automakers are eagerly jostling to carve out their respective identities. Some invest in proprietary technology while others repurpose nostalgia. Once unthinkable, several share the same engine, as parent companies continue to amass once-independent coachbuilders. In this new era, differentiation arrives via bold design and bespoke possibilities. Within this crowded luxury market, manufacturers wrestle not only with brand recognition but allegiance. Providing plush, dynamic sanctuaries that transport drivers and their partners or families, each vehicle found in these pages articulates its automaker’s vision, from more nuanced offerings to long-awaited arrivals.

Lamborghini 2020 Aventador SVJ Roadster

new luxury cars

SVJ stands for SuperVeloce Jota, or super-fast special performance edition. Only 800 units will be made.

Flirting with the absurd seems a common theme running through Lamborghini. That is, until Italy’s Raging Bull recognizes the lunacy, then transforms it into a track-ready, road-eager supercar — like the Aventador SVJ Roadster.

A 6.5-liter, naturally aspirated V12 (likely one of the last) pumps 770 hp through the convertible’s all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering system. A loud, fast-moving contradiction, its gun-slit windows abut bulky A-pillars, and trapezoids and triangles swoop and squish, forming lines that pinch and pucker. Technically, all the bodywork’s shapes can be found in nature — usually not together. But that’s part of the romance, and a textbook Lamborghini design aesthetic. These features also make the car go fast.

The company derived inspiration from spaceships and jet fighters, but oddly opted for an analog roof. Two rigid panels must be hand-removed and stowed in the car’s nose for open-air accessibility. It’s a supercar capable of 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds with a roof-off top speed of 217 mph, but the driver must pull over and exit the vehicle should inclement weather occur. It’s a charming irreverence, a reminder that cars can be quick, but they should also be fun.

Ferrari 2020812 Superfast

new luxury cars

Reigning supreme as the most efficient ever developed by Ferrari, Brembo extreme design brakes, which previously equipped the LaFerrari, come standard on the 812 Superfast.

Whenever Ferrari updates or redesigns, the Prancing Horse consults its racing annals and previous models. The arrival of the 812 Superfast brings the premiere of a new 12-cylinder engine, the singular machine that launched Enzo Ferrari from man to brand 73 years ago. The 6.5-liter, naturally aspirated V12 produces 789 hp, which crowns the 812 Superfast as the most powerful, fastest road-bound Ferrari ever built (with the exception of the mid-rear-engined, special limited-series 12-cylinders). Continuing its legacy, Ferrari referred to the F12berlinetta and the F12tdf for inspiration, regardless of the industry-wide shift away from big internal combustion engines and toward hybridization and electrification. In an unusual but unsurprising evolution, the Italian supercar brand is capitalizing on the front-mid-mounted engine and pairing it with a rear-mounted transmission. This sophisticated transaxle architecture achieves the enviable 50:50 weight distribution.

Concorso d’Eleganza Varignana 1705

Cars Revealed for 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Varignana 1705

Branded a new Berlinetta, the 812 Superfast possesses the aerodynamic footprint and stylings of a fastback. Those entrenched in Ferrari lore will merely glance at its backside and immediately envisage the 1969 365 GTB/4 Daytona. The four round tail lights and quad exhaust pipes, not to mention the diffuser, will have fans seeing double. For all of the racing intensity and tradition-bound design cues, the interior is a study in simplicity. The pared-down edit offers a bounty of negative space — so refreshing in the age of touchscreens and overwhelming infotainment systems. Analog knobs and a sleek trio of buttons alleviate complex cockpit navigation. This vehicle wants its driver’s eyes on the road.

Bentley 2020 Flying Spur

new luxury cars

Laser-cut to shape, the Flying Spur’s crisp lines come courtesy of its superforming aluminum shaping process.

Like any coachbuilder with a century’s worth of automotive design and production, Bentley, for a time, lost its way. The splashy unveiling of the new Flying Spur, however, completes a powerful trifecta that’s poised to propel the British brand firmly into the next epoch. Alongside the Bentayga and freshly unwrapped Continental, the Flying Spur gives new meaning to founder WO Bentley’s objective to build “a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.” In its third generation, Flying Spur sits on the same basic platform as the Porsche Panamera, a fellow member of the Volkswagen Group. But that’s where the similarities end. Flying Spur’s formidable 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 mated to an advanced dual-clutch, eight-speed transmission serves two masters; it’s a sports sedan meant to be driven but also a luxury limousine assuming the authority of the Mulsanne, which ceases production this year.

Managing Director Dustin Dent on the Transformation of Nemacolin

Dripping in grandiose English luxury, from the pedigreed upright grille on the exterior to the world’s first three-dimensional, diamond-quilted leather inside, the 626 hp Flying Spur commands attention. A purposeful weight adds a sense of timelessness to the hand-carved wooden buttons, knurled aluminum bezels and rotating display, a trio of dashboard options that flip from a 12.3-in HD display to a blank wood veneer or a threesome of analog dials (time, temperature and compass). Fear not — the champagne fridge remains, albeit surrounded by a 2,200-watt, 16-speaker audio system with two active bass transducers, should the bubbly need a little beat.

Lexus 2020 LC 500h

new luxury cars

The LC500h’s Multistage Hybrid System allows it to operate with the gasoline engine off at speeds up to 87 mph.

Undoubtedly the way of the future, electrification excites, but many still find it impractical, unwieldy or lacking infrastructure. Steering away from purely naturally aspirated engines, Lexus continues to rule the hybrid space. The LC500h coupe functions as the first-ever multistage hybrid system, which pairs a gasoline engine with a duo of electric motor/generators. The result is a 3.5-liter V6 engine with D-4S direct fuel injection and a dual VVT-i valvetrain. It’s oddly curious, the silence that comes with 354 hp.

Lexus avoids strong narratives; rather than thrusting harsh lines and garish colors into the limelight, the brand instead favors a softer approach. Make no mistake, the LC500h’s elongated grille provokes, as does its chrome-plated moldings, which Lexus designers use to evoke the lines of a traditional Japanese Samurai sword. Understated modishness influences everything from its tail lights, which culled inspiration from the glow of a jet’s afterburners, to the hand-stitching and draping of the Alcantara interiors, an allusion to the Takumi craftsmanship paramount to Lexus’ design philosophy. (Considered the highest honor of the 7,700 workers at the Miyata Lexus Plant in Kyushu, Japan, there are only 19 Takumi masters.) Equally equipped to conquer the open road and face rush hour traffic, where the electric assist will dominate at lower vehicle speeds, the LC500h achieves a combined 30 miles per gallon — a novel thought for some daily sports car drivers.

BMW 2021 Alpina XB7

yachts luxury cars

The BMW Alpina XB7 marks the privately-owned company’s first foray into sport activity vehicles for the US market.

To create the ultimate driving machine, the BMW Alpina XB7 culled inspiration from across the BMW universe. A sport activity vehicle (SAV) — BMW patois for SUV — the Alpina XB7 gleans its stance and refinements from BMW’s X7 model line as well as the B7 sedan, Alpina’s other American-built offering. A privately-owned company, Alpina has a long-standing technical partnership with BMW.

An all-wheel-drive vehicle, the up-to-seven-passenger Alpina XB7 is based on the BMW intelligent xDrive system, which variably distributes torque between the front and rear axles. Producing 608 hp courtesy of a 4.4-liter biturbo V8, the Alpina XB7’s originality and ingenuity lies in its driver-assist system and superior mechatronics.

Far from being fully autonomous, the robust suite of standard assist programs includes a host of options that extend beyond most manufacturers, like rear collision warning, city collision mitigation (including cyclist detection) and a stop-and-go function within its active cruise control. Deployable up to 130 mph, it monitors both traffic and programmable distance control while maintaining a desired speed. Take ride height: the low-speed raise of 1.6 inches (for a total ground clearance of 10 inches) is expected, but the vehicle can also lower the same amount, dependent upon driver request or speed. Imperceptible to a quick glance, a lower center of gravity alters the automobile’s suspension geometry — Alpina’s expertise and arguably the XB7’s raison d’être.

Jaguar 2021 F-Type R Coupe

yachts luxury cars

The F-Type retains its first-generation platform, proof that perfection needs no amendments.

Competing with the memories of models past is a heady yet inescapable task for the Jaguar F-Type. Allusions to the sanctified E-Type of the 1960s abound — yes, the one Enzo Ferrari called the most beautiful car ever made. Thanks to its classic sports car proportions, the new F-Type toys with its own bygones. The sculpturally sleek hood and buttoned-up backside abide by a familiar silhouette (one that has garnered the F-Type 180 design and car awards since its arrival in 2013), while the teardrop headlights and s-curve roof convey a sense of thoughtful modernism. The performance-tuned F-Type R employs a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that pumps out 575 hp, ample energy and outstanding suspension; it’s refreshingly effortless to maneuver.

New springs, dampers, anti-roll bars, lower-friction wheel bearings, stability control, rear-biased torque split and wider back tires further equip this F-Type to best its signature handling. It doesn’t need to pile on unnecessary comforts or roar to feel the road, although Jaguar maintains its sense of British propriety with an optional quiet start mode. While some may argue the F-Type R is neither the flashiest or the fanciest, this automobile achieves the precarious balance between sports car and luxury, an oft-overlooked, albeit intricate, feat.

Range Rover 2021 Autobiography Fifty

yachts luxury cars

Only 1,970 units of the Autobiography Fifty will be produced worldwide, with roughly 500 allotted for the US.

Range Rover prizes thoughtful evolution overdramatic debuts. To celebrate its 50th birthday, the British brand fashioned a limited-edition vehicle based on its most sumptuously appointed SUV, the Autobiography. A fun twist, rather than a choose-your-own-adventure of customization, this specific model pays homage to past vehicles, from its grand black interior veneer to a trio of bespoke paint options that honor the original colors available at launch in 1970. Bahama gold, Davos white and Tuscan blue freeze a moment in time when the capability of a Range Rover was conveyed through bolder colors. Picture the snapshot: The mica-filled Mediterranean blue SUV throwing sand as it conquers a desert, or the Bahama gold mingling with old-growth trees as it approaches a beautifully appointed log cabin. Sitting on 22-inch bespoke gloss black, diamond-turned wheels, the Autobiography Fifty is available in both standard and long wheelbase versions. With 518 hp courtesy of a 5.0-liter V8, a familiar setup, this vehicle is less about inaugurating the new than acknowledging the brand’s rich heritage and creating an instant collector’s item.

Porsche 2020 Taycan Turbo S

yachts luxury cars

By 2022, Porsche plans to invest more than $6.6 billion in electric mobility.

It rhymes with icon. Taycan Turbo S, Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle, finds its power in a pair of permanent magnet synchronous motors, one for the front axle and another for the rear. Derived from a Turkish expression that represents a young stallion, Taycan vaunts 750 hp, redefining electric vehicle possibilities. Performance remains paramount. Taycan Turbo S’s response time is two milliseconds, a strong argument for retaining the ‘Turbo’ moniker. (Despite the flagrant lack of forced induction, the Germans kept the naming convention intact.)

Ditching the grille in favor of a double-black-diamond slope of a hood that frames the road between its globular fenders, the four-door, all-wheel-drive sports sedan sits on 21-inch wheels. While other EVs rely almost exclusively on single-pedal driving via regenerative braking — when the driver lifts off the throttle, rather than coasting, the car quickly slows, utilizing that kinetic energy to recharge the battery — Taycan Turbo S requires the driver to apply the brakes. And they’re large, 16.5-in carbon ceramic ones in the front and 16.1-in in the rear — perhaps a reflection of track days? The EPA-estimated range is an abysmal 192 miles. To compensate, Taycan Turbo S uses 800-volt charging, an architecture that’s twice as powerful as other EV system voltages.

Akin to a circular cinema, the interior eliminates physical buttons. Everything, from the door locks to the windows, operates via one of five touchscreens, LCD displays (steering wheel controls notwithstanding) or voice commands starting with “Hey Porsche.”

Aston Martin 2021 DBX

yachts luxury cars

The twin-turbocharged V8 features cylinder deactivation technology to enhance fuel economy.

The enormity of the task at hand cannot be understated. Aston Martin, arguably the creator of the most beautiful street-legal cars in the business, necessitates long-term salvation. As many luxury brands have discovered, redemption may come in SUV form. Beginning with a clean sheet of paper — as close to carte blanche as possible for a 107-year-old manufacturer — DBX is Aston Martin’s first-ever SUV.

Everything under DBX’s hood impresses, starting with the Mercedes-AMG-built 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine that yields 542 hp. Its aluminum body structure and cast aluminum suspension mountings allow the double-wishbone, split-link front and multi-link rear suspension to thrive across any terrain. But it’s in the design details that Aston Martin beguiles. The hidden side glass seals on the frameless doors finished with glass B-pillars create an uninterrupted line, freeing the eye to glide across the SUV. Cutaway sills narrow the car’s entry points, one less obstacle to worry about when wearing one’s Sunday best. Gliding into the Bridge of Weir leather interior, or, an industry-first fabric made from 80% wool, the sense of airiness continues via DBX’s full panoramic glass sunroof.

Options abound, from a snow package complete with boot warmers to a pet package that includes a portable washer. Although proficient in daily drivers, establishing a presence in the utilitarian and adventure markets maps uncharted territory for Aston Martin. Until now.

McLaren 2020 600LT Spider

yachts luxury cars

A limited-volume vehicle, each 600LT Spider is hand-assembled in Woking, England.

Ponder the misnomer of ‘adding lightness.’ McLaren’s latest offering embodies that philosophy while managing to redefine the status quo of a high-performance convertible. The fifth car to carry the Longtail name, the 600LT Spider features a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 capable of 592 hp. Generally, when automakers retool a coupe to a convertible, the scales tip in the most dreadful ways. Weight increases while headroom and driving comfort decrease. Rigidity is inevitably compromised. Not so with the 600LT Spider. Committed to a carbon-fiber diet, McLaren inserted its racing seats from the P1 and equipped the supercar with a forged aluminum suspension and minimalistic instrumentation in the cockpit. Engineers reduced the length of the exhaust pipes, rerouting them to exit atop the mid-mounted engine.

Hitting the scale at 2,859 lbs, the 600LT Spider delivers an astounding power/ weight ratio of 4.82 lbs/hp. (The traditional sports car standard is 10 pounds for every horsepower; the new McLaren doubles that.) Occasionally, driving a supercar feels more like a battle than a pleasure; not so with the McLaren. Falling into the LT lineup, its electrohydraulic steering provides concentrated but not overwhelming or unwieldy sensitivity. This machine fancies track-focused driving but is equally at ease playing nice in the neighborhood.

Maserati 2020 Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport Edizione Ribelle

yachts luxury cars

Only 25 Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport Edizione Ribelle exist.

Indisputably Maserati’s Grande Dame, the Quattroporte continues to blur the line between sports car and burly sedan. After five decades of fine-tuning, the Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport Edizione Ribelle embodies peak poise by way of persistence. Not in a category typically brimming with competition, the Modena, Italy-based brand remains committed to expanding its options and editions.

There’s a single specification that unites every car manufacturer: Any vehicle looks sexier, sleeker or, in Maserati’s case, more rebellious, when blacked out. The Quattroporte S Q4 GranSport Edizione Ribelle features a Nero Ribelle mica exterior, a black that accentuates its voluptuous quarter panels and catches streetlight reflections. Ample black chrome finishes, from the exhaust tips and the vertical grille bars to the 20-in wheels with contrasting red brake calipers, reinforce Maserati’s desire to encourage ‘the excitement of the urban night.’ The alternating nero and rosso (black and red) interior with contrasting stitching reads a touch Ferrari. And there’s more Prancing Horse under the hood: The Ferrari-designed and -developed 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine propounds 424 hp and a max speed of 179 mph.

The Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive system, with its variable torque control, shifts engine torque in real time from its normal rear wheel preference to a 50:50 weight distribution. With increased stability and dynamic functionality, Maserati’s flagship sedan refuses to sacrifice performance despite its reputation as an all-road, all-weather-condition vehicle.

Land Rover 2020 Defender 110 X

yachts luxury cars

Originally denoting wheelbase, the 110 naming convention remains constant, even though the vehicle now spans 119 inches.

Above & Beyond — equal parts decree, challenge and promise, that tagline has encapsulated the Land Rover spirit and the Defender nameplate since the latter launched in 1948. Steeped in history and deeply beloved, the new four-door Defender debuts after a two-decade absence. Off-road purists find disbelief in its unibody framework, oft considered to be weaker than the previously popularized body-on-frame architecture. Adding shock value, the SUV also deploys an independent suspension. Defender leaned into and learned from every Land Rover in order to efficiently prove the naysayers wrong. The turbocharged six-cylinder, mild-hybrid with an electric supercharger (P400 MHEV) pushes 400 hp and three times more rigidity; the Defender can handle school pickup and uncharted mountain roads with equal vigor.

Opulence befalls by way of technology and personalization. Windsor leather seats come with a side of fording capabilities (in up to nearly three feet of water). A thoroughly pragmatic ClearSight Ground View system uses a camera to display video of what’s normally obscured by the hood. Clever. An exposed magnesium beam doubles as the dash, providing pockets to stow gadgets and gear, both wild and urban. With over-the-air updates for Defender’s infotainment and electrical architecture, two separate modems ensure that software can be downloaded without affecting data flow, like streaming music, to Wi-Fi-connected devices.

Rarely has a nameplate soaked in sentimentalism and adventure married modern comfort and drivability with rugged and refined capability like Defender does.

Rolls-Royce 2020 Black Badge Cullinan

yachts luxury cars

Although one in five Rolls-Royce commissions is executed as Black Badge, Cullinan will assuredly increase that ratio.

Long recognized as the pinnacle of luxury, Rolls-Royce currently finds itself in a peculiar position: It’s popular. The lynchpin of the shift from bombastic chauffeurs’ car to en vogue automobile arrives courtesy of the Cullinan, Rolls-Royce’s lavishly capable SUV. Catapulting the brand into the fresh decade as the fastest-selling new model in the firm’s history, nearly half of Rolls-Royce’s 5,152 deliveries (the most in its 116-year history) in 2019 were Cullinans, all of them bespoke.

The arrival of Black Badge Cullinan — deemed ‘the King of the Night’ by the British brand — drives that momentum forward as the BMW group subsidiary inaugurates a handful of firsts. The first-ever colored brake caliper, a high-gloss red paint, offsets the new 22-in forged alloy wheels. The famed starlight headliner makes its SUV arrival on Black Badge Cullinan. Its 1,344 individual fiber optic cables showcase a brand-new feature: eight shooting stars. Hand-polished for up to five hours in what the brand considers the most comprehensive surface-finish process ever applied to a solid paint color, the exterior is coated with multiple layers of paint and lacquer.

Re-engineered for enhanced dynamic performance, the drivetrain and chassis deliver a 600 hp, 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 punch — enough for any escapade. Marketed as the more avant-garde edition, Black Badge Cullinan features a ‘low’ button, a supplement to the gear shift that unlocks an audible rumbling exhaust — yet another demonstration of Rolls-Royce’s commitment to charming a younger demographic.

Audi 2021 RS6 Avant

yachts luxury cars

Customer demand from a global fan base prompted Audi to homologate the high-performance wagon for America

As the tide of unending crossovers and SUVs continues to rise, Audi opted to make an altogether different kind of splash. Crossing the Atlantic for the first time in its quarter-century history, the RS6 Avant is a supercar cloaked in the body of a station wagon. Shared with both Porsche and Lamborghini, its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine produces 591 hp, which helps it complete the 0-60 mph sprint in an impressive 3.5 seconds. More akin to full-size, realized Hot Wheels — complete with Valcona leather — than Clark Griswold’s Country Squire, the RS6 Avant is all angular lines. From its honeycomb-style ‘squircular’ (when a square meets a circle) grille, over its bulging fenders that house purposefully enlarged wheelhouses, and around to its duo of egg-shaped exhaust pipes, Audi forwent subtlety for statement-making.

Embracing its Bavarian roots, the RS6 Avant features all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Wheel-selective torque control grants drivers the ability to direct nearly all the 590 lb-ft of torque to one wheel, providing greater maneuverability at low speeds and engaged stability at higher ones. It’s traditionally a sports car flex, now achievable in a hatchback. Driver-focused technologies range from Dynamic Ride Control (an elective sport suspension) to progressive steering. Three-dimensional city maps proffer practicality while interior displays track tire pressure and g-forces, demonstrating how a vehicle typically dismissed because of its styling unites everyday functionality and performance.

Mercedes-Benz 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63

yachts luxury cars

A series of preprogrammed, 10-minute sequences offer drivers a massage program complete with fragrance control, music options and light settings.

At no point were the words “that’s enough” (or likely “ das ist genug” ) uttered in the presence of the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63. Surprising, one might say, considering the significant restraint typically found in German engineering. Instead, Mercedes-Benz bucked the steady rise of luxury crossovers that have signaled the demise of the grander, weightier, haul-it-all sport utility vehicles. The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 makes a compelling argument with this magnificent 603 hp, third-row, seven-passenger SUV with 80 cu ft of storage space and a seemingly never-ending list of options.

The more is more ethos means that not only does the vehicle boast nine USB ports, two heated and cooled front cupholders, 64 color interior ambient lighting options, pneumatic self-leveling (a constant vehicle level despite load weight), six drive programs and, of course, all-wheel drive, but it also introduces a battery-powered EQ boost atop its 4.0-liter V8 biturbo hand-assembled engine. In layman’s terms, that’s additional horsepower and lb-ft torque under hybrid power and everything, options-wise, but the kitchen sink. While it could easily fall victim to its own weight, the Mercedes- AMG GLS 63 handles with unexpected ease.

Like a pair of freshly ironed trousers, heavily contoured powerdomes pleat the hood and elongate the roofline. Long, low bumpers complete with air inlets and a statement-making quad of exhaust pipes accentuate its width. Inside, the raw amount of uninterrupted space, underscored by the panoramic sunroof, alludes to a mobile greenhouse. Being a passenger might be as lovely as actually driving.

What Richard Rawlings’ Car Collection Was Really Worth When Sold

This truck could dethrone the toyota tacoma as america's favorite, 10 of the most expensive cars unearthed in the world's biggest barn find.

When it comes to American classics , a few things come to enthusiast's minds. Muscle cars may be the most thrilling and iconic types of old-school American cars, and it's hard not to love their tire-shredding V8 power and un-apologetic brutal spirit . But, when it comes to luxury and comfort, a type of American classic known as "land yachts" is some of the best you can get for a pure luxury experience.

Incredibly, and often unnecessarily large, V8-powered, and plush on the inside, a land yacht refers to full-size luxury cars of the '60s and '70s, back when some genuine craftsmanship was used to make luxurious interiors, and massive bodies gave some boat-like handling, gliding over the road in great comfort . Often playing second fiddle to muscle cars, there are many truly luxurious classic American land yachts out there you can buy for not all that much money. So, read on, to see 8 such cars you can get for under $15,000.

The very definition of a "land yacht," when it comes to big and comfortable American cruisers, really doesn't get better than an old-school Cadillac. Especially so, the Eldorado stood out as the top-of-the-line model within GM's crowd of luxury cars.

A nameplate representing the top end of Cadillac's already high-end lineup since 1953, the Eldorado was a massive 2-door luxury beast fitted with the best luxuries whatever period it was sold in had to offer. For its 9th generation starting in 1971, the Eldorado shared a platform with the Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado, but was the supreme luxury model, with seats inside that are plusher than most sofas could ever hope to be, as well as a massive 500 cu-in V8. Not too hard to find in good shape for around $15,000 , the Eldorado is about the most luxurious car you can buy for this price.

8 Buick Riviera (3rd Generation)

Back when Buick used to stand for great luxury and style, the Riviera was a long-running model within Buick. Evolving with an incredible boat-tail design for its 3rd generation, this Riviera was a proper luxury car through and through.

Introduced for 1971 and lasting until '73, the unique Bill Mitchell-directed boat-tail design 3rd gen Riviera has also had a distinct interior design compared to its predecessors and successors. Designed with a dashboard that envelopes the driver and passenger, the Riviera's interior is among the most well-appointed for its time. Also supremely comfortable and powerful, the 3rd gen Riviera came equipped with a Buick 455 cu-in V8 with up to 265 hp. While you'll have to look for a '73 model if you want one at this price, the boat-tail Buick Riviera can be found for around $15,000 .

7 Buick Electra/Electra 225 (3rd & 4th Generation)

While the Riviera is a properly luxurious land yacht, it was slightly sportier and slightly smaller than its big brother - the Electra. One of Buick's range-topping luxury cars, the Electra was a massive uncompromising luxury cruiser.

Taking over the Super and Roadmaster nameplates in 1959, these two cars became the Electra, and Electra 225 respectively. As one of the top-end Buick models, the Electra 225 was and would continue to be packed with all the greatest features of the time. Entering its 3rd generation in 1965, the Electra could be had with engines like the Buick 455 cu-in V8 laying down 370 hp, and continued to use it through its 4th generation starting in '71 (though choked down by new emissions requirements). Incredibly large and luxurious, Electra examples from both the 3rd and 4th generation can be had in good shape for around $15,000 .

6 Lincoln Continental (5th Generation)

Ford's most luxurious car of decades past, the Lincoln Continental is iconic as a ridiculously big and luxurious coupe, being the ride of choice for past Presidents. Massive in every sense, the 5th generation Continental offers some great land yacht value.

A historic nameplate for Lincoln, the Continental first came about in 1940 as a stylish and luxurious coupe and convertible. Using large V8s for most of its model life, the Continental received a  462 cu-in V8 in 1966 , though shrunk slightly for the '70s, remaining at 460 cu-in up until 1979. Sold from 1970 until '79, the 5th gen Continental brought it up to modern specs and was packed with the greatest luxuries and features of its day - aiming squarely at Cadillac and their previously mentioned Eldorado. Not hard to find for around $15,000 in good shape, a 5th gen Continental fits the land yacht bill like few other cars do.

4 Oldsmobile Toronado (1st Generation)

You won't be finding a perfect examples at this price point, but when it comes to running and driving ones in need of a little work, you can own Oldsmobile's most unique looking stand-out luxury cars from their golden age for not much money at all.

Introduced in 1966, the Toronado replaced the Starfire as Oldsmobile's stylish personal luxury coupe , with plenty of innovation, power, and luxury inside. Getting its power from an Olds 425 V8, the Toronado made 385 hp and was the first FWD American car since the 1930s. The Toronado lasted until the '90s, but generations following the first became less spectacular and were choked down significantly by new regulations, dying in the '90s as an unremarkable machine, de-valuing the Toronado name significantly. Shockingly cheap for how innovative, luxurious and awesome it is, a '66-'70 Toronado can be found in decent condition for around $10,000 .

3 Oldsmobile 98 (8th & 9th Generation)

One of the longest-running names in Oldsmobile's history, the 98 stood out as the flagship luxury land yacht within Oldsmobile's lineup, being more conventional than the Toronado. Similarly seeing its nameplate dragged, a 98 can be found for relatively cheap.

Originating in 1940, the Oldsmobile 98 (also referred to as "Ninety-Eight") stood for the top dog in Oldsmobile's lineup. With their Series 60 being the small entry-level car for 1940, the Series 90 was the full-size king, and with an inline-8 (later a V8) under the hood was known as the 98 (Series 90 + 8 cylinders). Remaining on sale until 1996, the best mix of affordability and classic luxurious land yacht spirit can (arguably) be found in the 98's 8th, and 9th generations, spanning 1965 until 1976. You'll be looking at a price of over $15,000 for a decent '60s example, but the still large and luxurious early '70s ones can be found for around $10,000 in good condition.

2 Pontiac Grand Prix (2nd Generation)

A nameplate dragged as far down as possible, the Grand Prix's final generations were frankly terrible plastic-filled commuters, but the early ones stood out as fantastic blends of power, luxury, and style rolled into one awesome personal luxury coupe.

Re-designed for 1969 , the Grand Prix's 2nd generation broke from the previous elegant styling, and combined tough muscle car looks with its land yacht proportions. Those muscular looks weren't just for show either, as the 2nd gen Grand Prix was powered by a choice of big V8s up to a 428 cu-in-unit pumping out 390 hp in '69. A similar mix of muscle car and luxury cruiser on the inside, the 2nd gen Grand Prix's styling may not be to everyone's taste, but at under $15,000 for a decent running and driving example offers a great deal for a big and luxurious classic muscle car.

1 AMC/Rambler Marlin

One of the most distinct-looking and unique of AMC's '60s classics, the Marlin was a short-lived model based on the personal luxury coupe formula, but with some unique twists to its design. Mostly forgotten today, the Marlin offers a great classic luxury bargain.

Debuting at the 1964 Chicago Auto Show as the Tarpon concept, designer Richard "Dick" Teague penned the flowing lines and dramatic fastback. Built on the Rambler American platform, the Rambler Marlin debuted in 1965 as a luxurious fastback coupe. A slow seller for AMC, the Marlin was updated in '67, now built on the AMC Ambassador platform as an AMC model - but was killed off that same year. A widely ignored, but comfortable cruiser, the Marlin can be found for around $10,000 in good shape.
