Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup: Excellence and Evolution

yacht costa smeralda 2023

Geneva, 22 August 2023  – One of the most important events on the international yachting calendar, the annual Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is synonymous with excellence. The regatta and its organizer, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), have been partnered by Rolex since the mid-1980s. A partnership of such longevity is rare in sport and lies at the heart of the event’s continuing evolution and ability to maintain the highest of ‘standards’.

Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard, the legendary yachtsman from the United States and a past competitor at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, explains how the close partnership between the Swiss watchmaker and the YCCS is fundamental to the continued success of the event:

“For four decades, Rolex and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda have forged a privileged relationship. These two partners stand for the highest quality and excellence in everything they do, and as a result, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup offers the ideal platform for owners and their crews to enjoy elite competition in a striking and demanding location . ”

YCCS Commodore Michael Illbruck agrees with Cayard that the historic partnership is at the heart of the event’s continued appeal:

“ The YCCS and Rolex have always worked together to evolve an event created with a very clear vision: to become one of the world’s most important and spectacular sailing events, one which entices the best sailors to compete and inspires maxi yacht owners and designers to continue to drive the sport forward . ”

The regatta is renowned for its professional organization, excellent sailing conditions and a first-class schedule of events off the water. In 2023, the 33rd edition commences on Sunday, 3 September and concludes with the final prize-giving on Saturday, 9 September.

The event typically attracts about 50 yachts measuring from 18.29 metres (60 feet) in length to more than 40m (131ft). Divided into classes based on size and performance, and crewed by the world’s leading sailors, the yachts are a sublime combination of power, speed and elegance when racing. Thanks to the YCCS race management team, supported by the International Maxi Association, a recognized leader in its field, the week of competition is impeccably conducted.

Cayard confirms why sailors are perennially drawn to the event:

“The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is the very essence of superlative yacht racing – the most impressive yachts, sailed by the best sailors in the most perfect sailing environment. Victory at this regatta is one of the most coveted successes in the sport. The winners have overcome determined and skilful opponents across a demanding week of racing.”

Since its foundation, the event has been a showcase for both the potential and the evolution of yacht design and technology. It is considered the foremost proving ground for new launches and a place where designers, owners and sailors can meet to discuss innovations, developments and future projects. Success at the regatta confirms that passion and commitment have been well directed.

Completing the attractive package is one of the world’s most impressive sailing environments. The emerald waters, rocky outcrops and islets of north-east Sardinia’s Maddalena Archipelago offer an exceptional arena for yacht racing, with varied conditions and testing courses. Across five days of intense competition off Porto Cervo, crews tackle a programme of windward/leeward and inshore racing through and around the archipelago. Consistency in performance is critical, teamwork essential. For the top performers, recognition comes in the form of class victories and the associated trophies.

Rolex Testimonee and four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie, another past competitor, highlights the event’s distinct spirit:

“The setting inspires excellence. From a sporting perspective, precision is critical to successful performance in sailing. This is never more so than at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, which has long showcased the world’s elite sailors using their skill and expertise to get the very best out of powerful, technically complex yachts . ”

For close to 40 years, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has provided the perfect platform for the world’s most powerful monohull yachts to perform to their full potential. And, thanks to the close and careful partnership of the YCCS and Rolex, it appears set fair to continue delivering for many years to come.

ABOUT ROLEX AN UNRIVALLED REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND EXPERTISE Rolex is an integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacture. Headquartered in Geneva, the brand is recognized the world over for its expertise and the quality of its products – symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige. The movements of its Oyster Perpetual and Perpetual watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for their precision, performance and reliability. The Superlative Chronometer certification, symbolized by the green seal, confirms that each watch has successfully undergone tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria. These are periodically validated by an independent external organization. The word ‘Perpetual’ is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster watch. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of the company, instilled a notion of perpetual excellence that would drive the company forward. This led Rolex to pioneer the development of the wristwatch and numerous major watchmaking innovations, such as the Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, launched in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism, invented in 1931. In the course of its history, Rolex has registered over 600 patents. At its four sites in Switzerland, the brand designs, develops and produces the majority of its watch components, from the casting of the gold alloys to the machining, crafting, assembly and finishing of the movement, case, dial and bracelet. 34th Edition of Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Gets Underway in Porto Cervo

34th Edition of Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Gets Underway in Porto Cervo

8 September 2024,  Porto Cervo, Italy -  The 34th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup officially opens today, 8th September 2024, with the Skipper's Briefing followed by the traditional Welcome Cocktail on the terrace at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda . The regatta, reserved for yachts over 60 feet (18.30 metres) in length, is organised by the YCCS with the support of title sponsor Rolex - with whom it celebrates 40 years of partnership this year - and in collaboration with the International Maxi Association (IMA).

A new addition for this year is the incorporation of the first edition of the Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship, reserved for the fastest Maxi yachts, with an IRC time correction coefficient (TCC) of 1.700 and above.

The quays in front of the YCCS are now home to the 44 maxi yachts, which, starting tomorrow Monday 9th September, will bring this unique regatta to life. Known for the calibre of both the yachts and their crews, racing will take place against the breathtaking backdrop of the La Maddalena Archipelago. The fleet ranges from the “petite” 18-metre Blue Oyster , to the imposing J Class yachts, including Svea - the largest participant at 44 metres.

In 2024, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Rolex will celebrate the significant milestone of 40 years of partnership. This strong bond is built on shared values of excellence, innovation, technology, respect for the sea and support for the next generation. These pillars have sustained a successful collaboration that began in 1984 with the Rolex Swan Cup, followed by the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup the next year, and subsequently by numerous high-profile international regattas, organised both in Porto Cervo and abroad. In particular, a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of sailors led to the decision to host three up-and-coming athletes from the Young Azzurra sports programme aboard maxi yachts owned by three YCCS members. Maddalena Spanu (reigning Wingfoil world champion), Federico Pilloni (current iQFOiL junior world champion) and Cesare Barabino , a talented ILCA 7 sailor, will have the opportunity to race aboard much more complex craft than their own, sharing this exciting and inspiring experience through the social media channels of Young Azzurra and the YCCS .

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2023

The yachts competing in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship have been grouped into classes according to their type and performance. Within each class, course times will, as always, be compensated on the basis of the specific rating of the individual yacht. The Race Committee will also decide on the most suitable course for each class on a daily basis, based on boat characteristics and weather conditions. The entire fleet will be set coastal courses winding through the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago, while the pure racers in the Maxi 1 and 2 classes will also have the opportunity to show exactly what these boats and crews can produce on windward-leeward courses. The Race Committee will give six different starts for the divisions Maxi 1, 2, 3, 4, Supermaxi and Multihull.

Ten crews will be competing in the first Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship, the majority of which have been training in the waters off Porto Cervo in preparation for the event. The stellar lineup includes: Bullitt, owned by YCCS Commodore Andrea Recordati; Capricorno, a brand new 82-footer making her regatta debut; Deep Blue, owned by American philanthropist Wendy Schmidt; Django HF, owned by YCCS member Giovanni Lombardi Stronati and returning to competition after major upgrades; Galateia; Leopard 3; Magic Carpet Cubed, owned by YCCS member Sir Lindsay Owen Jones; My Song, owned by YCCS member Pier Luigi Loro Piana; SHK Scallywag and finally the WallyCento V.

The crew lists also include a roster of names of undisputed renown, such as Germany’s Jochen Schuemann, tactician on Magic Carpet Cubed boasting three gold and one silver medal at the Olympics, Brazilian Joca Signorini on Bullitt, New Zealander Murray Jones on Galateia, Italians Vasco Vascotto on Django HF, Flavio Favini and Alberto Bolzan on Capricorno, and American sailors Ken Read and Ed Baird on V and Leopard 3 respectively. Contenders for the first Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship are scheduled to complete four days of coastal racing as well as a day with two windward-leeward races.

Competition will be no less fierce in the remaining classes, with the Maxi 2, home to the former Maxi72 racer class - now racing under IRC - fielding Proteus, North Star, Jolt with Hamish Pepper and Francesco De Angelis on board, and Jethou with Ian Walker on tactics. The programme for this class is to complete two days of windward-leeward competitions for a maximum of four races, with the rest of the race days dedicated to coastal courses.

The largest yachts, sailing in the Supermaxi class, will have their compensated time calculated under the ORCsy rating, specially designed for this type of yacht. The battle also commences tomorrow for these giants of the fleet, including the Swan 115 Moat, owned by Juan Ball, Claus-Peter Offen’s Wally 101 Y3K, and Viriella, owned by Vittorio Moretti – all YCCS members – along with the two J Class yachts Velsheda and Svea. On board are leading yachtsmen such as Mauro Pelaschier, Bouwe Bekking, Guillermo Parada and Karol Jablonski, to name but a few.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2023

The 9 yachts in the Maxi 3 class and 10 in the Maxi 4 class include the SW 82 Grande Orazio, Open Season and H2O, owned respectively by YCCS members Massimiliano Florio, Thomas Bscher and Riccardo de Michele, in addition to Wallyño, owned by IMA President Benoît de Froidmont.

The Multihull class sees Highland Fling 18 and Allegra, owned by YCCS members Lord Irvine Laidlaw and Adrian Keller respectively, join the Gunboat 66 Gaetana on the starting line. On board are international sailors such as Paul Larsen, world sailing speed record holder, calling tactics on Allegra, with Brian Thompson and Cameron Appleton in the role of tacticians on Gaetana and Highland Fling 18 respectively. The Supermaxi, Maxi 3, Maxi 4 and Multihull classes will compete exclusively on coastal courses in the La Maddalena Archipelago.

A key element of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, once the battles on the water are over, is also the social programme back on dry land. Crews will gather each day in Piazza Azzurra for post-race refreshments, the Rolex Gala Dinner will take place on the evening of Thursday 12th September in the picturesque village of San Pantaleo, while the following evening the Crew Party will be held in Piazza Azzurra. Finally, on 14th September at 5.30 p.m. the every-thronged prize-giving ceremony will conclude the 34th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

Racing is scheduled to start tomorrow, 9th September, with a warning signal at 12 midday CEST. Strong westerly winds of 26 to 28 knots are forecast.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, impressive fleet expected in Porto Cervo

  • Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

A fleet of around 50 maxi yachts is due to gather in Porto Cervo from 3rd to 9th September for the 33rd edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with title sponsor Rolex and the International Maxi Association.

As always, the fleet will be a varied one, ranging from cruising yachts to pure racers, all with a minimum length of 60 feet (18.3 metres). The boats will be divided into different classes according to type and performance characteristics, with each class producing its own Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup winner.

Courses will be structured to allow competitors to race around the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago, enjoying a unique natural backdrop, while the schedule for the more technical classes will also feature windward-leeward courses. Each day, based on the forecast winds, the Race Committee will choose the most suitable course, usually differentiating the length for the various classes so that all competitors end up racing over a similar amount of time. Once the fleet has returned to the docks and completed the usual post-race operations, a range of social events are scheduled ashore for both crews and owners with their guests.

Completely new to the event for this year will be a division reserved for the increasingly popular class of multihull yachts. Enrolled for this debut outing are: Allegra, a custom design by Nigel Irens owned by YCCS member Adrian Keller and winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race in her class, the Gunboat 80 Highland Fling 18 owned by YCCS member Lord Irvine Laidlaw, and the Gunboat 68 Convexity 2.

The 33rd Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will also host the regatta debut of Y3K, a brand new Wally 101 owned by club member Claus-Peter Offen, which will compete against fellow supermaxi yachts such as the Swan 115 Moat, the Spirit 111 Geist, the Maxi Dolphin Viriella, and Inoui, all topping 30 metres in length and regular participants in YCCS regattas.

yacht costa smeralda 2023

The magnificent J Class yachts will once again return to grace the waters of the Costa Smeralda for the occasion. Measuring over 40 metres in length, these classic designs were the stars of the America's Cups of the 1930s. Their elegant, slender forms embody the classic idea of a sailing yacht in the collective imagination, and "the Js" always attract a great deal of admiration whether on the quayside or the race course. This year Svea, Topaz and Velsheda will be sailing on the waters off Porto Cervo.

Classic lines are not reserved solely to the J Class, however, as this edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will feature Baruna of 1938, a 22-metre hull designed by the renowned Sparkman & Stephens studio, fresh from a major and lengthy restoration.

Moving from the world of yachting of the past to that of the present and a flurry of recent projects, the entry list includes the Wally 93 Bullitt, owned by YCCS member Andrea Recordati, and the ClubSwan 80 My Song owned by another YCCS member, Pier Luigi Loro Piana, which returns to Porto Cervo after her debut at the event last year.

As always, such high-profile yachts are crewed by top-level sailors including some of the yachting world's greatest champions. During the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the docks at the YCCS are guaranteed to present a veritable who's who of the elite of international sailing, attracting not only owners and sailors, but many of the leading names in international yacht design.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will conclude on 9th September, while the YCCS season will continue with two events dedicated to the International 5.5 Metre Class, the Scandinavian Gold Cup, which is part of the historical fabric of this former Olympic class, followed by the World Championship from 24th to 29th September.

The final day of the 34th Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the first Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship was an excellent one.

The event was organised by the YCCS with the support of title sponsor Rolex – with whom it celebrates 40 years of partnership this year – and in collaboration with the International Maxi Association (IMA). Thanks to a Mistral wind ranging from 16 to 24 knots, the fleet was able to complete a coastal race in the type of perfect conditions that have earned the Porto Cervo race course its international renown. Among those enjoying the racing at the YCCS were Quanhai Li, President of World Sailing, and Francesco Ettorre, President of the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV).

Victory in the first Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship went to Joost Schuijff’s Leopard 3 with Ed Baird – winner of the 32nd America’s Cup at the helm of Alinghi – calling tactics.

Also taking home the top prize in their respective divisions at the 34th Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup were: George Sakellaris’ Proteus in the Maxi 2 class, the J Class yacht Svea in the Supermaxi class, Aldo Parisotto’s Oscar 3 in Maxi 3, Riccardo de Michele’s H2O in Maxi 4, and Riccardo Pavoncelli’s Gaetana in the Multihull class.

To make the most of this final day, the Race Committee had moved the start time forward to 10 a.m. CEST, and racing began promptly in ideal conditions, with Mistral winds of 16 to 18 knots. For the Maxi 1 and 2 classes, a course of around 43 miles was chosen that initially took the two divisions south to round the islands of Mortorio and Soffi, then on an upwind leg to enter the La Maddalena channel through the Passo delle Bisce strait, before circumnavigating the islands of La Maddalena and Caprera clockwise and heading on a final reaching return leg to Porto Cervo, leaving the Monaci islet to starboard and the Secca di Tre Monti shoal to port.

All other classes completed a course of around 31 miles: after leaving the Monaci islet to port, the fleet sailed a close reaching upwind leg towards the Secca di Tre Monti shoal, from where they too rounded the islands of La Maddalena and Caprera in a clockwise direction and turned back towards Porto Cervo on a downwind run.

The newly-crowned world champion, the 100-foot Leopard 3, came out on top thanks to a win in today’s race alomgside two fourth places in the windward-leewards held earlier in the week, bringing them to an overall total of 9 points. Completing the podium were Django HF on 12 points, and the WallyCento V with 14 points. In this highly competitive Maxi 1 class, Deep Blue and Bullitt also ended the series with 14 points, but lost out on countback.

It was a similar situation in the Maxi 2 and Supermaxi classes. In the Maxi 2 group Proteus finished on equal points (8) with the runner-up, Jolt, with her win in today’s final race making the difference. Third place went to Northstar of London. Among the Supermaxi, the J Class yacht Svea won today’s race to oust Moat, winner of the first coastal race, from the top spot. Third place went to Velsheda, the other J Class yacht competing.

In the Maxi 3 class, Aldo Parisotto’s Oscar 3 came out on top, followed by Spirit of Lorina, today’s winner of the day, and Grande Orazio, who took third place on equal points. Likewise in the Maxi 4 class, the winner H2O was followed by Wallyño in second and Shirlaf in third on equal points.

Two wins ensured victory for the 66-footer Gaetana in the Multihull class, leaving Allegra in second place and Highland Fling XVIII in third.

Spectators were treated to particularly spectacular duels throughout today’s race between those boats with closely-matched performance characteristics, such as the four Maxi 2 boats, the multihulls Allegra and Highland Fling XVIII, and the J Class yachts Svea and Velsheda. Competition was also breathtakingly tight between the 100-footers Galateia and SHK Scallywag, Oscar 3 and Grande Orazio in the Maxi 3 class, and between the 60-footers Wallyño, owned by IMA President Benoît de Froidmont, and Manticore.

Today the three young athletes from the Young Azzurra sports programme had the opportunity to race aboard three different maxi yachts owned by YCCS members. Maddalena Spanu (reigning Wingfoil world champion), Federico Pilloni (iQFOiL world youth champion) and Cesare Barabino, an ILCA 7 athlete, all relished this new and illuminating experience.

Andrea Recordati, YCCS Commodore: “This 34th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was undoubtedly complex due to weather conditions that prevented us from racing as much as we would have liked, but all credit must go to the Race Committee and the entire Yacht Club Costa Smeralda organisation for giving it their all. Today really delivered, offering the brisk, steady winds typical of the Costa Smeralda and a coastal course that took us through the spectacular scenery of the La Maddalena archipelago, and it was a good race for everyone. Congratulations to the winners in their respective classes and thank you on behalf of the YCCS to all the participants who helped make the event, as always, unique. I would also like to thank the president of World Sailing, Quanhai Li, for his crucial support and for being here with us in Porto Cervo, as well as our partner Rolex, with whom we are celebrating 40 years of collaboration.”

At a packed prize-giving ceremony in Piazza Azzurra, Rolex timepieces were awarded to the owners of the first-placed yachts in addition to two perpetual trophies in memory of Commodore Alberini, presented to Adrian Keller of Allegra, and the Paolo Massarini ORC Challenge Trophy, reserved for the Supermaxi class winner, Svea. Riccardo de Michele, owner of H2O, also received a prize as the top-ranking YCCS member.

During the 34th Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, electric buoys with GPS positioning were used for the starts and windward-leeward courses, eliminating the need for anchoring, and preserving the integrity of the seabed.

?The YCCS now turns its attention to the 22nd Rolex Swan Cup, starting on Monday 16th September.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup: trionfo di Leopard 3 nel primo Maxi 1 World Championship

Successo a porto cervo per la 34ª edizione dell'evento organizzato dallo yacht club costa smeralda.

yacht costa smeralda 2023

Aspire lift 5.5 Metre world title after tense final day in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has won the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, after a tense final day on the water in light winds with just one race possible. They overcame a massive challenge from  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) who ended up just one point behind, while Race 9 winners  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) protected their third overall.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Ku-Ring-Gai III  led at every mark to take a well-deserved bullet and secure third overall, while  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) sailed a great race to cross third to end a tough week for them   For  Aspire , this was their first attempt at the world title and also marks the first ever 5.5 Metre title won by a Polish team. Winning major titles, and Olympic medals, is no stranger to Kusznierewicz but he was genuinely delighted, and relieved, to have taken home this title this week.   “It's an amazing feeling to be the world champions in the 5.5 Metre class. We enjoyed it so much. Actually, I must say, it was tough. We had to put a lot of energy into it. We built up for a couple of days after arriving here, and every day we were striving to improve. I believe this dedication was the key to our success – to never give up, to be better every day. We delivered. Just one point ahead of  Artemis . Congratulations to them. Also, a shoutout to the Australian team led by John Bacon. The entire fleet was fantastic, and we truly enjoyed Porto Cervo and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Thank you very much.”

Middleman, Przemysław Gacek, added,  “We really enjoyed our time here. It is my first title ever, so I'm super excited. I was practically pushed into the water already, so I'm quite wet. It’s been an amazing few days in Porto Cervo, a great venue for sailing with different angles and conditions. Today was a surprise because after the first race, it calmed down, and we thought we were going back. Then they let us go for the last race, which was just unbelievable. We pretty much, let’s say, defended the championship in the last two, three hundred meters. An amazing time. Also, big congratulations to Mateusz, our incredible skipper, and to Ed, who, after becoming the World Champion in Finn, secured his second World Championship this year. We are proud to have him as a team member.”   Current Finn world champion, and bowman, Ed Wright, was overjoyed to win a second title this year, “ It was an awesome regatta, really. Porto Cervo is an incredible venue with some really good winds, offering a mixture of sailing conditions – wavy, flat, windy, light, medium, testing every sort of angle of sailing technicality. Being a member of  Aspire  was fantastic, and I'm happy to have won the world championship. It was stressful along the way with our ups and downs, but in the end, we came out on top.”

Aspire and Artemis slug it out for 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) extended on the fleet with a race win apiece on the penultimate day of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia.  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) moves up to third.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Thursday brought light and occasionally moderate winds for a great day of racing in Porto Cervo, while many of the top 10 recorded some high scores, which opened the gap for the top two boats.   The first race started with a Mistral wind of 8-9 knots with several boats over the line at the start, which left them playing catch up. The front runners from the start were  Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott),  Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  rounding the first windward mark in that order, very close to each other.    Aspire  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III  used the downwind pressure well, both passing  Jean Genie  and from that point onward, they led the race, with  Aspire  crossing first ahead of  Ku-Ring-Gai III .  Jean Genie  managed to secure third on the last downwind leg, passing  Artemis .

Artemis fight back on Day 3 of World Championship in Porto Cervo

Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) put in the best performance on day 3 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, to pull back to within three points of event leaders  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright).  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) moved up the third after winning the last race of the day.

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

Despite the earlier start at 11.00 to make the best of the forecast, Wednesday produced light and shifty conditions of no more than 5-8 knots that challenged everyone and brought a lot of different boats to the front of the fleet. It was a tough day and many decisions had big consequences as the fleet navigated the tricky wind.   In Race 5,  Marie-Françoise XXII  (SUI 232, Jürg Menzi, Lionel Rupp, Christof Wilke) rounded first and sailed away to a comfortable win. Behind them,  Beta Crucis  (AUS  63, Bob Stoddard, Martin Cross, Simon Reffold) rounded second with  Artemis  in third and battled downwind and up again with  Caracole  (SUI 214, Bernard Haissly, Daniel Stampfli, Nicolas Berthoud) also in the mix. As they approached the finish,  Artemis  just had enough lags to cross in front of  Beta Crucis  to take second.   The breeze looked like it might increase for the second race but in fact dropped to 5-6 knots. This time,  Isla  (GBR 40, Stephen Quigley, William Finlay, Tom Quigley) rounded first from John B and  Melx III  (GRE  5, Stavros Papagiannopoulos, Panagiotis Kamouridis, Pavlos Kagialis). At the gate  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) was just ahead of  John B  with the Greeks still in third. It all changed on the second beat with  John B  making a break and leading down to the finish from  Artemis  and  Ku-Ring-Gai III.

Both  Artemis  and  John B  put in impressive performances in very tough conditions. With the discard now in after six races,  Aspire  holds a three point lead over  Artemis , which scored two amazing second places today, while  John B  is a further nine points back.   Gavin McKinney said,  “The first 10 minutes of the race set the tone, and whether you're a slow or fast boat matters. If a slow boat gets in front, faster boats may catch up, but if a fast boat positions itself well, it becomes challenging to be overtaken. Two days ago, a faster boat passed us when we were in front. Today, we had good pressure, played some shifts well, and that seemed to work in our favour.   “It's crucial to secure a decent lane at the start and then position yourself on the right side. In the first race today, unfortunately, we were on the wrong side, and we faced some challenges. However, in the last race, we made the right call, and upon tacking, we achieved a favourable angle and quickly moved ahead of the fleet. It's a bit like rolling the dice, and consistency pays off. We're pleased, especially considering we were almost late for the start today. We managed to get out there, and we used our light gear, which was a bit of a gamble, but it turned out okay. It was the first time we've used it.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

It's the first major championship for the Greek team and they are really enjoying the fleet and the competition.   Stavros Papagiannopoulos said, “ We truly appreciate the class and the races, and the race committee does an excellent job. The weather has been very pleasant, and today's conditions were particularly accommodating for us, resulting in a much better performance compared to previous days.   “In the second race, we fared quite well, relatively speaking. The initial part of the race was solid, and we managed the downwind section effectively. However, we encountered some challenges in the second part, leading to a bit of a setback and we ended up in 11th position.”

Aspire seizes lead on Day 2 of 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) has taken the lead at the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, after two more races on Tuesday, in very different conditions.   The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) drops to second and  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) remains third.

Highlights from Day 2 of the 2023 5.5 Metre World Championship in Porto Cervo

Louise Morton, possibly the first, but certainly the first women in a long time, to win a 5.5 Metre world championship race said,  “It was a fantastic day of racing. We had a clear plan going into it, but unfortunately, we got off to a rough start and had to cross a few boats on port after the initial start. However, we decided to head towards the right side of the course, where we found better wind pressure, and it paid off. We managed to secure a lead at the first mark and maintained it throughout the entire race. It was incredibly thrilling, even though I wasn't allowed to glance around much. I kept asking, "Are we still in the lead?" So overall, it was a great experience, and I'm thrilled with our performance. Winning a race in a world championship is a first for me, and I'm absolutely ecstatic about it.   “However, the second race didn't go as smoothly for us. We had a decent start and managed to reach the top mark in the vicinity of fifth place. Unfortunately, the wind became extremely light, and the waves were still quite substantial. We encountered some challenges, including hitting a mark, and this led to various mishaps. Several boats ended up passing us during this race. We're hoping that this race will be our discard, and we can bounce back in the upcoming races.”

Aspire  has taken the overall lead after four races. Kusznierewicz said, “ Sailing in Porto Cervo for the World Championship has certainly presented its challenges. We always have a plan for the first beat after the start, but here, you really have to sense what the wind will do. The conditions are made trickier by the significant waves, which persisted even when the wind was lighter today.    “The 5.5 boat is fantastic, and I absolutely love sailing it. However, it's crucial to work as a cohesive team; it can't be just one person's effort. I'm genuinely pleased with how Ed and Czemek (Przemysław) performed today.    “We operated as a unit, responding to the waves and the wind. Really good job for Louise and her team for winning the first race of the day, and I also want to commend Bernard Haissly from the  Caracole  team for their good performance.   “But we're mindful that this regatta is far from over; we're not even halfway through. Our focus must remain sharp. I've stressed to my team that it's going to be a long week. The weather forecast for the upcoming days suggests it won't be easy. We can expect varying wind conditions, sometimes even light winds. There are plenty of exceptional sailors here who are fully capable of winning races. So, we're staying focused, aiming to enjoy the experience, and in the end, we'll see where we stand.”

2023 5.5 Metre SGC and WC Porto Cervo, 20-29 September

On  Ali Baba , five times (as helm) world champion Flavio Marazzi is sailing with his two daughters, Julie (15) and Eline (12). They are now in eighth overall after a 2,4 today, matching the score of  Aspire .   Julie explained,  “The 5.5 is an incredibly cool boat to sail and sailing with your family is always a fantastic experience. It allows us to spend quality time together and build a strong sense of trust and mutual respect. It's funny because when we were kids, we used to say, ‘Dad's a sailor,’ but we didn't fully grasp what that meant until we started sailing ourselves. We've developed a deep respect for his profession and what he does.   “Additionally, the location here is stunning, and sailing in Porto Cervo is a lot more enjoyable than back home in Switzerland at Thunersee. It's a bit wilder here with more waves and, usually, more wind. Although today's conditions weren't as windy as we'd hoped for, the first race was still amazing.”   In the Evolution fleet,  Criollo  (GER 30, Andreas Christiansen, Felix Christiansen, Moritz Christiansen) maintains her lead in 22nd, while the first Classic boat remains  Cibele  (ITA 72, Fabrizio Cavazza, Vittorio Zaoli, Duccio Colombi) in 24th. Racing in Porto Cervo continues Wednesday and runs through until Friday.   Results after 4 races 1  Aspire  (POL 17, Mateusz Kusznierewicz, Przemysław Gacek, Edward Wright) 10 2  The Jean Genie  (GBR 43, Peter Morton, Andrew Palfrey, Ruairadh Scott) 19 3  Artemis  (NOR 57, Kristian Nergaard, Johan Barne, Trond Solli-Saether) 21 4  New Moon III  (BAH 25, Mark Holowesko, Christoph Burger, Peter Vlasov) 25 5  John B  (BAH 26, Gavin McKinney, Mathias Dahlman, Lars Horn Johannessen) 28 6  Ku-Ring-Gai III  (AUS 66, John Bacon, James Mayjor, Terry Wetton) 29 7  Girls On Film  (GBR 41, Louise Morton, Andrew Mills, Sam Haines) 32 8  Ali Baba  (SUI 224, Flavio Marazzi, Julie Marazzi, Eline Marazzi) 34 9  Shaolin  (SUI 226, Philippe Dürr, Andreas Kindlimann, Hans Von Werdt) 36 10  Manly  (AUS 44, Marc Ryan, Dave Edwards, Marcus Burke) 38   Full results: https://www.yccs.it/regate-2023/international_55_metre_class__world_championship-3311/risultati-307/risultati_provvisori_dopo_r2   Many more photos in the gallery here::   https://www.flickr.com/photos/fivepointfivemetre/albums/72177720311474707

Terzo posto per Northstar of London.

Swan 65).

From Now On), uno dall'India (Swan 58 Aquarius) cui si aggiunge l'armatrice egiziana del ClubSwan 36 Lady Ghada.

Porto Cervo, 17 settembre 2024.

From Now On), uno dall’India (Swan 58 Aquarius) cui si aggiunge l’armatrice egiziana del ClubSwan 36 Lady Ghada.
