Use the diagram below to reference Harken part numbers to appropriate application on your 505 sailboat. Parts recommendations are offered as a guide for common applications.

Carbo T2 Jib Cars

To get the most out of the 5o5 in lighter air, teams have begun to pull the boom to windward. Pulling the mainsheet bridle across is now an additional step you need to master. This simple system helps makes it easier to have perfect tacks. There is nothing to cleat or uncleat. As you roll tack, pull the center of the bridle control line where it crosses the centerboard trunk. When you get to the new high side, you'll find the bridle is now offset on the windward side. Friction contributed by the bridle's travel over the side tank, combined with the tension from the shockcord between the two T-18 blocks in the back, lock it into its new position. The system is easily adjustable as hand tension will overcome the shockcord and that friction.

Radial Vang Traveler

Gybing the 5o5 has never been easier now that most boats are running two poles. To begin the gybe, pull one of the two pole-out lines (cleated under the gooseneck on a pivoting exit block) until the inboard end hits the mast. When it's time to gybe, simply uncleat that pole-out to snap the pole back into place alongside the boom. Then gybe the boom, give the new weather pole-out line a pull, and you're off and running.

Designed in 1911 by naval architect Francis Sweisguth, the Star was born to replace the 17-foot “Bug,” which was one of the most popular keelboats at the time. By May 1911, the first Star class regatta was held on Long Island Sound and featured five of Sweisguth’s new boats. By 1922, the Stars already numbered in the hundreds, thus leading to the foundation of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA).

Just under twenty-three feet in length, the hull is long and narrow and features an integrated bulb keel positioned just aft of the mast. In adherence to strict class rules, the Star weighs 1,479 pounds and is typically constructed of fiberglass. Older wooden hulls can still be found from time to time, but rarely in competition. The hull has gentle, sweeping chines leading toward the water line that not only provide a speed advantage, but attribute to the yacht’s aesthetically pleasing appearance.

During the yacht’s one hundred year history, new features have been incorporated into the design in an effort to maintain the class’ position as the pinnacle of the international racing community. The class association began asserting a control over new refinements, not to stifle progress, but to maintain a level of competition based more on the skill of the sailor than the technological advancements of the yacht. Some of the features include:

  • Adjustable jib leads
  • Crew hiking vest
  • Suction bailers
  • Unique, circular boom vang
  • Whisker pole
  • Strict class association sail measurements

One of the interesting features of the Star is the hiking vest. The vest is worn by the crew and allows him or her to adopt a unique hiking position by “drooping” their body over the side of the hull. In addition to the vest, the Star also features a circular vang system. Designed for the star, but eventually adopted other classes, the circular vang system provides a safe means to deal with the enormous loads of the yacht’s large sail plan.

Numerous champions of the sailing world spent time sailing the Star and hold prestigious international titles. A Star Class World Championship is often considered on the most coveting trophies in all of sailing. Despite the high level of competition at top tier events, the Star also offers opportunities to local and amateur sailors. The depth of skill level and opportunity is unrivaled by any other racing class. Sailors looking to compete at the local level can often gain experience with the boat and progress up through the levels of competition, not to mention enjoy the thrill of sailing such an incredible boat.

Get involved with the Star Class! If you want to begin racing there are plenty of Stars out there looking for a good home. Thanks to the regulation in design features, many older Stars perform just as well as their newer counterparts and run at affordable prices. If you are a former college sailor or young professional looking to stay active at the highest level of competition or looking for a fast boat to sail at the local level perhaps a Star should be your next boat…

Sadly, in 2011, it was decided that the keelboats would be removed as an Olympic class following the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Recently rumors began to circulate of comeback for the 2016 Games; however these were quashed almost immediately by the ISCYRA. Despite being struck from the Olympic books the Star class has showed no signs of losing momentum. Huge turnouts for Barcardi Race Week and the 2012 Star Winter Series appear to have breathed new life into the yacht. With hundreds of local regattas scheduled this year and dozens at the internationals and championship level, the Star class remains strong

I have a mast in my plans. I also have the information that a 60’ Selden 304 mast section works. All the data for a Selden 304 is in the Selden catalog so I have the numbers.

However, given that very exact information, how do I then go for used masts?

I see ads like “55ft sailboat mast — $5000”

Or

“Amel SuperMaramu mast $6000”

How will I ever know if a mast I find is going to be right given nobody selling the used mast knows these other numbers?

It’s a so the moments are a little different. Then again, the probably doesn’t matter since I know a Selden 304 is the right mast and the numbers for that section are available online. Does this belong in the section?

fine for your 40 ft boat are great I would think if they are close to the same length.
On a 31 ft boat I built many years ago, I had a selection of two extrusions, one seemed marginally small, the other seemed a bit big. I went with the big one as that was my mindset on building that boat, but later I kinda wished I had went with the smaller extrusion. It seemed every boat my size I compared with, and even a bit bigger , had smaller lighter spars.
On the same boat I hired a well know architect to help me with my rig design. I designed it and then had him evaluate it. One question I had was spreader location and length. it seemed they could be a few feet up or down and not really change much as far as the rig calc's go. The rigging wire angles dont change much up or down.
Based on all this, I think it's as much an art as a science. Sure there are numbers you can crunch. But there are many possible outcomes that work fine. Limited options to use prevail. If you design a mast only for hurricanes you are going to have a pretty ugly and heavy rig.
What may be more important is the rigging, that's what holds the mast up and you can use a thin bendy mast if you have the right rigging, or multiple spreaders. Compression loads are such that the is not going to crush like a bellows, they just don't get high enough. But "slenderness ratio" can be a factor if the rigging is not right and then compression load comes into effect. Any un straightness in the mast can cause it to fail.
If you look around and measure the mast sections of boats your size, I bet you'll find they are all quite similar for cruising boats. - Elmore Leonard

if they have any around. Seems some of the old ones have a rack of masts that appear unused for years.

, because there is more than one way to skin the cat, depending on and performance.
Spreader location/length for example could drive a to select one nominal section over the other, or force selection of a particular section, due to characteristics, by playing with the location/size of spreaders and mast fittings.
No one learns how to perform this analysis overnight or by asking questions on . For many, it's not something that's worth their time or within their capacity to understand, which is true among many subjects to which people opine about sailing.
Although riggers are not naval architects, you should be able to find plenty of qualified ones that have the capacity to guide you through the decision process of selecting a used mast serviceable for your intended function.
You may see that many options beyond "original design" will be feasible, but the original design likely provided a good compromise and a balanced rig. For example, as the spectrum between cruising performance and performance is navigated by the designer, the rig tension is proportional to mast flexibility. You can support a noodle, or you can support a tree trunk, it doesn't matter. It's all in the way you do it and the excepted outcomes. That's why people pay people who do that analysis for a living. You are correct to assume that you don't know what you don't know.

  • About the Star

The Star is one of the most prolific keelboats in the world for a reason: it is an incredible boat to sail. Designed in 1911 by Francis Sweisguth, it has proven to be a classic in every sense. It is the oldest Olympic class, having first been used in competition in 1932, and still at the heart of that competition today. Supported by a worldwide association the Star as a class is one of the best organized in sailing, with over 7,500 yachts built over its 80 year history, and 2000-plus actively racing today.

The Star has evolved into the consummate craft for all ranges of competition and performance sailing: its equipment and rig is simple enough for the novice, yet versatile enough for those on the forefront of sailing. It's large, powerful sailplan, combined with a sleek hull and light weight, propel the boat in the faintest of airs, while the flexible spar can be tuned to "de-power" when the breeze kicks up. The large main is infinitely adjustable, allowing the sailor to completely control the driving surface of the sail. Boats today are generally constructed of fiberglass, with positive flotation and an integrated keel. The design, sails, and equipment of the Star are governed by stringent class rules, created to improve competition on the basis of skill and control cost . This has also served to help the longevity of the design, keeping older boats competitive through careful evolution.

Stars are generally "dry-sailed", that is, stored on their trailers when not in use, and with a total weight around 1500 lbs, can easily be towed from place to place.

Many of the world's top sailors past and present have been involved in the Star Class. It's list of former World Champions reads like Who's Who of yachting: other top sailors such as Colin Beashel, John Kostecki, Mats Johansson, Hans Vogt, Benny Anderson, Rod Davis and Mark Reynolds are also involved in the Star class. But the class is made up of a variety of sailors of all ages and skill levels. One race on a Star has hooked some sailors for life: they'll tell you: It's a thrill.

Star: Art and Machine

The Star has practiced a philosophy of design evolution over its 80 year lifetime. Always staying at the forefront of sailing technology, the Star maintains a conservative balance aimed at keeping the level of competition high, holding costs in check and preserving the initial spirit of this great yacht. The priorities of safety and practicality have ruled most of the changes made over the years. This control over development of the class has kept boats that would have been retired at their age in other classes racing well into their golden years. Some of the features that can be found on today's Starboat are:

Adjustable Jib Leads The four-way action of the deck-mounted jib leads allow you to carve the shape of the sail, keeping a good shape to match changing conditions.

Hiking Vest A simple harness allows the crew to get his or her weight out of the boat more efficiently. Made legal by class rules in 1981, the vest must be equipped with a quick-release to ensure safe exit in an emergency. The vest eliminates alot of the exertion and gymnastics traditionally associated with extended periods of hiking.

Suction Bailers Developed by Star sailor Duarte Bello, sailors quickly discovered that several strategically placed bailers can quickly and safely drain any excess water in the cockpit Most Stars generally have 4, two in the center of the cockpit, and two located near the chines.

Circular Boom Vang Also developed by Duarte Bello for Stars, this innovation reached popularity in the 1960's, having proven to be a safe and efficient way to control the high loads of the long boom. This development later spread to other classes, among the 12-meters of America's Cup fame.

Whisker Pole The simple sailplan utilizes a whisker pole to sail wing-on-wing off the wind, thus making the most of the generous sail area.

Class Sail Measurement The ISCYRA measures every sail to ensure fair competition: the rules do not allow the exotic materials that drive up cost and cut the lifetime of other racing sails.

What do the colored Stars represent? Respecting the valued traditions of the Star Class, all Honor Award sailors are requested to display their highest award on their mainsail. Gold for World Champions Silver for Continental Blue for District Green for Novice

Scott Rowland's 4 time National Champion #727 Chuck Luscomb the 2008 Nationals Champion

I f you are reading this, you may be among the many skippers considering the Star 45 for their next boat.  You’re not alone but there are some things you should ask yourself before choosing which Star you would like to sail. Do I buy a glass boat or do I build a wood boat.  Hopefully what we will share next will help you on your way.

Glass VS Wood

  Benefits of a wood boat…

You build it, which is nice and if you actually have the time and are able to complete the build, you have something to be proud of.  CPM has seen some very beautiful boats.

Cost... The out of pocket cost of a wood boat is quite inexpensive and you can buy components as you need them.

Not so good benefits of a wood boat…

There really are no two wood boats that are exactly alike.  Some of these differences are simply cosmetic while others effect performance and speed.  Your skill as a builder and how you set up your boat can often effect your results on the race course.  Since there are few that are identical, you never really know what to change or adjust to make the boat go faster when it is not.

  Resale value…

Lets say you missed a key build feature in your first boat that unless it is fixed, will keep you finishing in the middle of the fleet.  You decide to put your boat up for sale and build another.  Since you are now trying to sell your boat to the home built market, you should not expect to get much money for your boat regardless if it is complete and ready to sail.

  Benefits of a Glass boat…

If you want the building experience, CPM can provide you with a kit from hull deck rudder and keel to a complete kit with rig, sails and radio.  You don’t have to hunt down suppliers as the kit comes as complete as you want.  When you have a question about how to tackle a certain part of the build, you are not posting questions to a forum where people don’t know your boat.  CPM knows exactly how to build it so if you have a problem simply call us or e-mail us your question and we will get right back to you.

If you are like most of our customers, brimming with enthusiasm for racing but short on time to build your own boat, then you may elect to purchase a ready to sail Star.  You would do so knowing that your new Star is race ready and has the right combination of balance and speed to win regattas.  You might consider this big talk so we would rather let our track record speak for us.  CPM/Skidoo hulls have been in the winners circle 6 out of the last 10 National Championships.  That is no easy feat and  it demonstrates that CPM is committed and able to deliver a Championship boat each and ever time.  The winning lies with you and your thumbs.

  Resale…

CPM boats have a history of holding their value even in a down economy. Mostly because people are short on time trying to make ends meet and don’t have the time to build a wood boat.

We hope that what we have shared here will help you choose which type boat you would like to build/sail.  Both glass and wood have very strong arguments that favor each.  Which ever you choose, we hope you do choose and join us for what is one of the best classes in the AMYA.  See you on the pond.

Now available from CPM in Short Kit form and Fully Built is the One Design STAR 45. Recently featured in the AMYA quarterly Issues #113 and #143.

finish_a.jpg (38193 bytes)

CPM purchased the Star 45 tooling from Ski-Doo Ind. in '07 and has started manufacturing the boats at our Shop in Stevensville MD. The record for hulls from this tooling is one of the best in the country with Scott Rowland of Dayton, OH winning the '99, '01,'03 and '04 National Championships.

David Ramos won the Nationals in 2007 and the 2008 National Champion Chuck Luscomb all won with a CPM boat in there first star regatta.

HI! Ed My boat is in Helsinki but I'm in the Moscow at the moment. Therefore I can't measure the sheaves now. I hoped that if I can get to know exact sizes, I can purchase new halyards prior to my trip to Helsinki. In addition I'm thinking about new synthetic halyards (old halyards are steel wire rope). P.S. Usual Russian measurements is metric.

RAD

Good question, my main halyard is about 7/16 (I need to measure this to be sure) and I also have a another 3/16 wire rope as a spare working halyard (bosuns chair) A couple of years ago I tried to replace the main halyard by using a paper clip between the halyards and I never could get it past the truck and whats on my list is to inspect those sheaves to see whats going on.

Re: Hi all! Konstantin, On my 26 the boom is adjusted by the topping lift which is attached to the top of mast. The bitter end goes to a cleat on the boom. Releasing the end from the cleat allows the sail to hold up the boom, thus adjusting the shape of the sail. Ed K South Carolina, USA

Hi Ed! Thanks for explanation. I didn't understand what is the additional rope on the top of the mast... Now it's clear for me!

Re: Hi Ed! Konstantin: After I posted, I notice that I forgot to say line first goes thru turning block on end of mast then to cleat. That allows for adjusting leach for sail shape. Fair Winds, Ed K

Konstantin: Let me try a 3rd time: Line goes from top of mast to turning block on end of boom to cleat. This allows adjustment of boom height and leach of main sail. I guess a technical diagram would be easier to post. I further guess that the topping lift could be further run to mast again and other blocks to lead back to cockpit so that you do not have to get on side deck to adjust? I might have to add organizer under mast next year to do that. Hummm... Ed K

Konstantin here's a link for a company that can replace the sheaves with new ones for rope halyards http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/SparParts/Sheaves.html Also my 1978 32 has a label down below in the salon on the mast that says Schafer Spars and I've read that other ODays about that age had the same hope this helps identifying your mast for parts

Hi RAD! I was in Helsinki last week and I've bought new plastic sheaves from "Selden". This sheaves enables to use halyards up to 12 mm.

PICT9005.jpg

Konstantin nice sheaves! where was the picture taken on the boat, in other words what is that board for? looks like it was taken in the cockpit

Hi RAD! Yes, a photo was taken in the cockpit of my boat.

Konstantin Is the board used as a seat? by the looks of where the picture was taken it looks as though its between the lockers and aft of the wheel in front of the entrance to the aft cabin

It's a small folding table in front of the entrance to the main salon. It's mounted on the steering column. There is a more informative photo.

PICT9011.jpg

OK now I see, I have a simalar table on my pedistal. The original picture looked like there was a custom table across the cockpit, its fun to look at other 32s to see what other owners have done for ideas

New sheaves in the top of the Mast.
