Scenic announced the launch of the vessel in January 2016 and awarded the construction contract to the Uljanik Group based in Croatia. The vessel’s delivery was, however, delayed due to financial challenges faced by the Uljanik Group. In February 2019, DIV Group and Fincantieri came to the rescue of Uljanik Group by purchasing an interest in the company and, subsequently, led the construction of Scenic Eclipse.

The yacht was finally delivered in  August 2019, followed by a christening ceremony in September 2019. The shipbuilding contract also includes an option for a second ship to be delivered in 2020.

Scenic Eclipse ship embarked on her maiden voyage from Reykjavík to Quebec in August 2019, followed by discovery voyages to the Americas, Antarctica, Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as the Arctic and Norwegian Fjords.

Scenic Eclipse Review

Review of scenic eclipse.

The 2019-built Scenic Eclipse cruise ship is a top-luxury boat with max passenger capacity 228 (plus 192 staff-crew) that looks more like a tycoon-owned superyacht than a passenger vessel. Its design features an ice-strengthened hull, top-deck helipad (with two on-deck stored helicopters / in hangars), 12x Zodiacs (high-speed, large-capacity RIBs / rigid inflatable boats), 1x mini-sub (7-person submarine), 1x ROV (camera-equipped Remotely Operated Vehicle). The aft-located Marina Platform is used for launching water sports equipment (aqua quad-bikes, seakayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling and scuba diving activities).

The vessel (IMO number 9797371) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000995) and registered in Nassau .

Scenic Eclipse cruise ship

With the yacht Scenic Eclipse, the river cruisetour company Scenic Tours (travel brand) entered the ocean cruising market. The ship was initially scheduled for delivery in August 2018, but due to construction issues was first rescheduled for January, then for April 2019. In February 2018, the shipowner Scenic Group (aka Scenic Tours Australia) signed a shipbuilding contract for the second (same-design) vessel - Scenic Eclipse II . The sistership was scheduled for delivery in 2020 but was eventually postponed to 2023 April.

Scenic's new market strategy followed the moves of Viking River Cruises (entering the ocean cruising market in 2015 with Viking Star ) and Crystal Cruises (entering the mega-yachting market in 2015 with Crystal Esprit/now Nat Geo Islander 2 ). Besides Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, the shipowner Scenic Group also owns the subsidiary and travel brand Emerald Cruises .

Scenic Eclipse cruise ship

Scenic's new ships are advertised as "discovery yachts". The hull has the highest passenger ship ice-class (1A-Super) allowing the vessel to operate on polar cruises (Arctic and Antarctica itineraries) for 3 months a year. On polar voyages, the ship's passenger capacity is limited to 200 in order to allow several Zodiac landings per day.

Scenic Cruises yacht submarine

The ship's two helicopters Airbus H130 (single-engine aircraft, each with capacity 7 passengers) can be booked/hired at extra charge. Helicopter tours allow passengers to get closer to the wildlife in comparison to the Zodiac landings. Also at an additional charge can be booked the ship's onboard submarine. The 7-person submarine (1 pilot plus 6 guests) is named "Scenic Neptune" and is capable to submerge up to 1000 ft (305 m).

The ship has "zero speed stabilizer fins" (50% larger than the standard on similar-sized vessels) allowing it to navigate in rough seas with just little movement. Voyages to Antarctica include passing Drake Passage - a notoriously rough waterway between South America and Antarctica.

Scenic Eclipse Wiki

The Malta- flagged luxury superyacht Scenic Eclipse (IMO number 9797371, MMSI 248526000) was built with the latest technological advancements in order to ensure the highest safety standards. It has custom-built stabilizers (50% bigger than other vessels) and an ice-strengthened hull. The vessel's state-of-the-art fins (propulsion units) are able to adjust themselves, enabling the ship to handle the strongest water currents and to remain stable.

Unlike other ships that use traditional anchors, the cruise ship is fitted with a dynamic positioning system. It uses GPS data to accurately maintain its position, which is an eco-friendly way to control the vessel. Other environmentally sustainable systems are advanced / more efficient marine engines and water treatment system.

On November 22, 2016, started vessel's construction with the steel-cutting ceremony held at Uljanik Shipyard JSC ( Pula Croatia ), Ship's integrated navigation and automation system was provided by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Maritime. This modern technology combines the following systems - Navigation, Dynamic Positioning, Automation, Emergency Shutdown, Power Management, Safety Management, and Control. The system is integrated with online diagnostics and remote service facilities.

On April 28, 2017, at Uljanik Shipyard was held vessel's keel-laying / coin ceremony. The special event was attended by Glen Moroney (Scenic Tours' founder and chairman). He placed an Australian coin beneath the ship's keel - a right of passage for every newbuild , to bring good fortune to its passengers and crew.

On January 31, 2018, was the ship's launch (float-out ceremony) at Uljanik Shipyard. The delivery was scheduled for August 31, 2018, but due to the shipyard's financial issues was rescheduled for April 13, 2019. Sea trials were successfully completed on June 13, 2019.

Both Scenic Cruises yachts are built in Croatia - Eclipse 1 in Pula (Uljanik shipyard), Eclipse 2 in Rijeka (3 Maj Shipyard), The following YouTube video is a timelapse of the Scenic yachts construction process.

The ship's Captain is James Griffiths - British, former Captain of the superyacht Wind Star ( Windstar ) and National Geographic Explorer ( NatGeo-Lindblad Expeditions ). He has also served on 10 other ships (as Captain on 4 of them) and also worked for Cunard Line for 11 years - as Chief Officer of RMS Queen Mary 2 .

In late-July 2019 was announced that the ship's godmother will be Helen Mirren (Dame Helen Lydia Mirren) - 1945-born English actress who won British Academy Film Award for Best Actress (1984, 1985, 2006, 2012), British Academy TV Award for Best Actress (1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2003), Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress (1983, 2001, 2004, 2013) and Tony Award for Best Actress (1995, 2002, 2005), among others.

Vessel's official christening ceremony was held on September 10, 2019, in Port NYC (New York USA) .

Since August 19, 2020, the vessel's crew managing company is Viking Crew (part of the Dover UK -based Viking Maritime Group Ltd). Viking Crew is responsible for the Scenic Eclipse 1 yacht's crew recruitment, management, deployment and placement, including the officers and staff-crew from the onboard Engine, Hotel and Deck departments. Viking Crew was also contracted for the crew management of the superyachts Scenic Eclipse 2 (2022) and Emerald Azzurra (2021).

This High-end Expedition Ship Has 2 Helicopters, a Submersible, and Butler Service

Here’s what it’s like to travel around the Mediterranean aboard Scenic Eclipse II, the newest high-end ship from the Australian cruise line Scenic.

The Staterooms

Bars and restaurants, shore excursions, amenities and entertainment, family-friendly offerings, accessibility.

The first thing I noticed about the Scenic Eclipse II is just how sleek the dark-hulled ship looked. Think mega yacht. No, think giga-yacht. At 551 feet, this is no small ship — even if, in the world of cruise lines, the Scenic Eclipse II rates as a rather intimate vessel, with a capacity of just 228 passengers.

Operated by the Australian brand that carved out a niche with luxury expedition vessels, this “discovery yacht” cuts the same gorgeous silhouette as its sibling, Scenic Eclipse , which debuted in 2019. Both ships also have all the hardware needed to operate in the polar regions, with an expedition crew to pull off adventures in places such as Antarctica.

But Scenic Eclipse II also represents an evolution: It has been tweaked with an eye to warm-weather destinations, such as the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Added on Deck 10 were plunge pools, sun loungers, and an indoor-outdoor Sky Bar. These features, the thinking goes, will be more in demand when the ship is in places like Southern Europe, say, where there’s less hard-core adventure and a more immersive shore-side experience.

To give it a try, I joined the Scenic Eclipse II for its christening journey in June 2023, traveling from Barcelona to Málaga, Spain, with stops along the way in the Balearic Islands. I was eager to compare the experience on this ship, in the bustling ports of Southern Europe, with the feel of the original, on which I had previously traveled to Antarctica.

The experiences were, as it turns out, starkly different. Unlike in the polar regions, where guests spend the lion’s share of their time on the ship, the Europe cruise took me to fascinating places on land: I spent most of my voyage on various city tours, visiting impressive sites like the prehistoric Talayotic villages in Menorca and the Botánico Biotecnológico, a high-tech botanical garden, in Ibiza.

One of the highlights of my particular sailing was the opportunity to chat with NASA astronaut Kathryn Sullivan, who was on board in her capacity as the ship’s godmother. She regaled us — passengers and crew — with tales of her career in space, her voyages on expedition cruises, and her descent into the Challenger Deep , the Pacific Ocean spot that’s more than 35,000 feet below sea level.

"There is one common thread of DNA that combines all these experiences: exploration and learning. That's has always been what motivates me," Sullivan said. "It's just the intense and pervasive curiosity about different places, about this planet. Who lives there? What critters live there? What's the landscape like?"

Truth be told, that same sense of adventure is what’s motivated me to hop aboard many expedition ships over the years. While this particular voyage through Spain lacked the feel of, say, an icebergs-and-penguins odyssey through Antarctica, I did appreciate being aboard a smaller ship during peak season in Europe. It was also a pleasure to return to the excellent restaurants on board — not to mention my spacious cabin — after a long day of touring on shore.

Here’s a closer look about what to expect when traveling on Scenic Eclipse II and my review of its staterooms, amenities, and more.

Scenic Eclipse II

  • With just 228 passengers — and a maximum of 200 in polar regions — Scenic Eclipse II offers an intimate experience.
  • Despite being small, the ship has 10 dining options, including high-end fine dining and casual spots.
  • All cabins have balconies and come with the services of a butler.
  • The ship has two helicopters and a submersible for heart-pumping adventures when conditions are right.

There are 114 balcony suites, and even entry-level options are attended by butlers. Even the smallest of the bunch, Verandah Suites, feel spacious, starting at 344 square feet. I particularly loved how roomy the bathroom felt — and how snazzy the black-and-white marble looked. All suites have king-size beds (that can be split into two twins) and high-end amenities including Dyson hair dryers.

Other cabin categories include Spa Suites (starting at 495 square feet), Panorama Suites (starting at 1,130 square feet), and Owner's Penthouse Suites (an astonishing 2,099 square feet). Spa Suites have the addition of a Philippe Starck–designed tub; the two Owner's Penthouse Suites on board have outdoor spa tubs on their sprawling terraces.

Scenic Eclipse II has an incredible array of delightful dining experiences — 10 in all. My favorites included the sushi bar, French restaurant Lumière, the adjacent Champagne bar, and Night Market @ Koko's, a venue with a rotating menu of regional cuisines, from the Middle East to India. I also loved the casual Azure Café, which serves lighter bites for breakfast and lunch, plus pizzas and pastas for dinner. Room service — which is available 24 hours a day — was also impressive. Finally, it's worth mentioning the gorgeous Scenic Lounge Bar, behind which is an illuminated display of rare whiskies, all available at no extra charge.

Where Scenic Eclipse II Sails

Where doesn't this ship sail? With Polar Class 6 rating, Scenic Eclipse II is capable of traveling to the Arctic and Antarctica but also spends time in warm-weather spots including the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia, depending on the season. The ship also travels to familiar cruise destinations, including the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Because of the ship’s relatively small size, it can visit some ports that mega-ships aren’t able to.

On my sailing, included shore excursions were fairly typical: Guests had their choice of city walking tours, along with visits to major attractions, like historic sites and cultural centers. In some destinations, we had the option to tackle more adventurous excursions, such as snorkeling.

When the ship is in "discovery mode," on expedition in more remote locations, such as the Arctic and Antarctica, excursions are more dynamic — think boarding Zodiacs to make “wet landings” on shore or for scenic trips around icebergs. In many destinations, Scenic Eclipse II offers helicopter and submersible excursions for an additional fee, depending on local regulations and the weather. .

The most notable amenity on Scenic Eclipse II is the spa, which spans nearly 6,000 square feet and includes a thermal suite. I also spent plenty of enjoyable time on the sun deck, where there’s a plunge pool and the indoor-outdoor Sky Bar. As far as entertainment goes, you won’t find the over-the-top productions that you might see on mega-ships, but that’s part of being on an intimate expedition-style vessel. There is a small theater, though, and I enjoyed the evening shows put on by the talented singers aboard.

Children aged 12 and up are welcome, but my sense was that this isn't a particularly kid-friendly ship: There’s no kid’s club nor is there any sort of programming aimed specifically at tweens or teens. The right kind of kids might like these trips, but they’ll need to be willing to be, potentially, the only youngsters aboard.

There are no wheelchair-accessible cabins on Scenic Eclipse II , which does have elevator service between all decks. Scenic advises travelers to contact the company before booking to discuss any specific accessibility concerns. Worth a mention was one moment during my trip, when several other guests and I were transported by bus from our pre-embarkation hotel to the port: We were dropped off nowhere near the ship, and there were no Scenic staff on hand to guide us to the terminal's entrance. A few dozen of us, including some people with limited mobility, found it to be a fairly difficult experience.

Scenic Eclipse Mega-Yacht Makes Waves in Costa Rica

Tico Times

The Scenic Eclipse, the world’s first six-star, lavish cruise ship, arrived in Costa Rica on Thursday. Its arrival inaugurated the luxury and expedition cruise season in Quepos.

This yacht brings aboard two helicopters and an expedition submarine. It is 168 meters long by 21.5 meters wide.

In addition, it incorporates the latest naval design and technology for exploring extreme environments, such as the Arctic and Antarctic coasts or the deep sea. The 17,000-ton vessel had an estimated cost of US $250 million, and its inaugural voyage was in August 2018.

Both helicopters fit six passengers, take off and land on the ship’s deck. The expedition submarine can dive to a depth of 305 meters. Its advanced eco-friendly GPS dynamic positioning system is designed to allow stationary maneuvers without dropping anchor, eliminating potential damage to coral reefs.

“Cruise passengers on luxury and expedition ships stay longer in the country. Tourists are usually professionals or businessmen with high purchasing power, with an annual income of between $80 thousand and $120 thousand.

On average, they spend $3,000, which is why Costa Rica is focusing attraction strategies on this type of ship to stay longer in the country. It will generate economic momentum in the tourism sector and port cities,” said Gustavo Alvarado, director of Tourism Management of the ICT.

Scenic Eclipse of the Bahamas-flagged Scenic Luxury Cruises visits more than 70 ports, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites and itineraries in Antarctica, the Arctic, the Caribbean, and South America.

The design of this ship was made under the complex requirements to face the most demanding conditions of storms, extreme temperatures, large waves, or ice presence.

Additionally, it has 114 cabins ranging from 32 to 247 m2, and all suites have private service.

The spaces on the yacht are complemented by an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, a 550 m2 spa, a gym, a yoga, a Pilates studio, and varied gastronomy.

It also has a theater equipped with the latest technology for conferences and projections, as a team of experts ranging from historians to marine biologists, geologists, ornithologists, naturalists, and photographers travel aboard.

For the enjoyment of its passengers, the cruise ship has kayaks, electric bicycles, snowshoes, and diving and snorkeling equipment, allowing travelers to experience all the operating routes of each destination.

Tourists will visit attractions such as Manuel Antonio National Park and enjoy different activities.

On this occasion, the ship arrived in Costa Rica with 62 passengers and 189 crew members for a 13-day voyage from San Diego, California, calling at ports in Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

Scenic has been teasing us with details and updates of the ship for years, but delays pushed out its original August 2018 sailing date.

The ship officially departed the shipyard on July 26 to take up its inaugural voyage on a 13-day discovery sailing from Reykjavik, Iceland via Greenland and Eastern Canada before arriving in Quebec on August 27.

“I’m very proud to say the Scenic Eclipse has been successfully certified for passenger ship operations, has been officially registered, and we are now in the final stages of preparations for our inaugural voyage”.

First pictures have been released of a new James Bond-style polar expedition ship as it sets sail on its maiden voyage.

State-of-the-art Scenic Eclipse carries two helicopters, which can be hidden away in hangars on the top deck, plus a submarine that can dive 1,000ft below the surface.

Until now, the inside of the luxury vessel has been a closely guarded secret. But today, as Scenic Eclipse sets sail on its first cruise - a 13-day voyage from Reykjavik to  Quebec - we can show you photos of the restaurants, bars and spa for the first time.

“Today is the fruition of many years of planning and work from a large and dedicated team to create a vessel and an experience which has set a new benchmark in ultra-luxury discovery cruising,” said Glen Moroney, chairman of Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours.

“We are extremely proud of this ship and what it brings to the world of cruising. In terms of innovation, technology and design, it is second to none. The onboard helicopters and submarine and our hand-crafted itineraries that take our guests to 38 countries in some of the world’s most stunning and remote locations are what truly set us apart.”

As I discovered on a visit to see the ship in Rotterdam last Saturday, Scenic Eclipse cuts a sleek, almost stealth-like, profile with its long, sharp bow, black hull and layered white decks.

Its two helicopters can each take six guests and a pilot on up to 12 flights a day. The experience is captured on five cameras as a permanent souvenir of the ride.

The air-conditioned sub, which also takes six passengers, can dive up to eight times a day. Guests sitting in two clear spheres on either side can swivel their seats through 280 degrees for the best view.

But that’s not all. The ship has a marina with 12 Zodiac boats and a fleet of kayaks, as well as the first stainless steel giant hot tub at sea.

An ice-strengthened hull means Scenic Eclipse can head into the Arctic and Antarctic.

Of course, all this adventure comes with a standard of luxury the old polar explorers could only dream of.

Six restaurants, a cafe and poolside grill offer a choice of menus including Italian, Japanese, French, Asian fusion, steak and seafood. If you want to pick up tips to improve your own cuisine, there’s also a cookery school.

As well as a spa with saunas, steam rooms and thermal lounges, guests can wear off some calories in a yoga and Pilates studio or fully equipped gym.

All this indulgence is for just 200 passengers in polar regions, or 228 when it heads to warmer climes such as the Caribbean, Greek islands and Spain.

The ship will be christened by Dame Helen Mirren in New York on September 10.

A nine-day cruise on Scenic Eclipse from Lisbon to Barcelona, leaving on April 11, 2021, costs from £4,075pp. To book, call 0808 256 5929 or visit scenic.co.uk .

Ten mega yachts registered in the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda are “widely known” to be associated with high-profile Russian oligarchs, including the owner of English football club Chelsea, Roman Abramovich.

The Bermuda Shipping and Maritime Authority (BSMA) said the ships were owned by overseas companies but linked to super-rich Russians.

“The BSMA can confirm that there are ten vessels that are registered with the Bermuda Ship Registry that are owned by eligible companies that are incorporated in other [British] Overseas Territories and these vessels are widely known to be associated with high-profile Russian nationals,” the spokesman told the Royal Gazette newspaper on Monday.

Transport Minister Lawrence Scott earlier said there was no “individual” Russian ownership on the island’s shipping register.

The Bermuda government says it will follow UK sanctions against named Russian oligarchs in the wake of the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The 162.5-meter Eclipse, owned by Abramovich, the billionaire owner of Premier League club Chelsea, is one vessel that flies the Bermuda flag. Abramovich, one of Russia’s richest men, was sanctioned by the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union. He put the football club up for sale before he was sanctioned.

Scott was asked last week if there was any chance the Eclipse would be seized as part of the crackdown on Russian assets in the west.

“No, because there is no Russian individual ownership on our shipping registry,” he responded.

The Eclipse is one of the world’s largest private yachts and has docked in Hamilton on a number of occasions in the past.

Abramovich’s Solaris mega yacht is also registered in Bermuda. London has said Russian vessels will be banned from British ports.

“There are no specific provisions in our maritime legislation that covers or addresses sanctions,” a BSMA spokesman said.

“The principal legislation for sanctions in Bermuda is the International Sanctions Regulations 2013 and the BSMA is currently working and consulting with the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Financial Sanctions Implementation Unit to thoroughly review and analyze the UK sanctions to determine the appropriate steps to be taken, and this process is ongoing.

“There are many interconnected facets, components, and consequences that must be carefully investigated and considered along with the safety and welfare of the seafarers,” the spokesman added.

The Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) last week announced that planes registered in Bermuda and leased to Russian airlines have had their airworthiness certificates suspended.

Premier David Burt said earlier this month that of the more than 900 aircraft on the Bermuda registry, around 740 were utilized by Russian operators – and that such aircraft will be “greatly impacted” by sanctions.

Scott told the House of Assembly earlier this month that the BCAA could take a hit of US$25 million over the next 12 months resulting from UK measures put in place to punish Moscow for its illegal invasion of Ukraine.

However, Scott told a news conference six days later the figure could be closer to four million dollars.
