These annapolis boats are probably decorated better than your house.

Christine Roney, an interior designer and owner of Annapolis Yacht Interiors, looks through fabric samples in her studio.

Christine Roney, an interior designer and owner of Annapolis Yacht Interiors, has hundreds of fabric samples in her studio.
A man cave, his yacht is not.
“It has to be a show boat,” says DeCesaris, 60, of Davidsonville. “Why? Because I’m married with three daughters. But it also gives me pleasure to see [the stateroom] with a brighter, more current look. If the boat had feelings, it would probably feel better, too.”
Gone are the linens of gold and beige, replaced by a lighter decor of silver and champagne. While the cost was “more than I would have imagined,” DeCesaris says, “it was really worth it. The truth is, if you can’t manage the upkeep, inside and out, you’re doing your boat an injustice.”
That’s a mantra shared by many, says Christine Roney, owner of Yacht Interiors of Annapolis, who rehabbed DeCesaris’ vessel. Roney, 44, a designer who grew up in Howard County, does more than 100 makeovers a year on everything from 21-foot sailboats to 110-foot yachts, and for clients from New York to Florida. One day may find her in Middle River, installing mildew-resistant blinds and drapes on a 46-foot schooner; the next, in Ocean City, reupholstering the settee on a 55-foot power boat.
“You can’t go to Macy’s and get draperies for a boat. So much of what I do is one-of-a-kind,” Roney says. “That’s the beauty of my job.”
She has replaced flooring and furniture, wallpaper and wall sconces. Roney has even installed a hot tub. Everything is custom-made because boats have more angles than a geometry class, says DeCesaris, a home builder by trade.
“A house is forgiving but in boats there’s no wiggle room, no tolerance for error,” he says. “In home building, everything has to be squared up, but there’s nothing square about a boat. Everything is curved, or has an angle to it.”
Cramped quarters present more challenges. Space is precious, even on yachts. Roney’s ottomans have tops that flip up, like mushroom caps, allowing storage space inside.
She has refurbished galleys as well. Gutting one required sawing the old refrigerator in half to get it off the boat. Last year, Roney helped resurrect a boat on the Eastern Shore that had partially sunk, replacing the flooring and constructing angular bed frames for new mattresses.
Clients may spend a few hundred dollars for a set of custom-made sheets or $12,000 for a sectional sofa. Whatever floats their boat. Why do they put such money into it?
“People enjoy the calmness and the peace of being on the water,” Roney says. “They love to entertain, have cocktail parties and take family vacations. They take their ‘portable condos’ up and down the East Coast, and they want it to feel like home.”
True enough, says Brian Sailer of Eastport, who treats his 44-foot power cruiser like one of the family.
“Boat owners are very picky, meticulous, detail-oriented and conscious of style,” says Sailer, 50, a Washington lobbyist. “Mine is very traditional, loaded with teak and holly, and refurbishing it required a feel for authenticity. Christine understood that.”
To that end, last spring, Roney reupholstered the L-shaped wheelhouse settee in a light ivory, ultra-leather, water- and light-resistant fabric, and the cockpit cushions in azure blue pinstripes.
In August, Sailer cruised to Nantucket and back, beaming, no doubt, whenever he docked, like a 1950s hot rodder drawing ooohs at a drive-in.
“It’s always nice to pull into a harbor and have people call yours a pretty boat,” he says. At what price?
“Mother Nature is harsh, but you don’t complain about cost when you own a boat,” Sailer says. “As the saying goes, ‘a boat is a hole in the water, surrounded by fiberglass, into which one throws money.’ It took me a long time to find this boat, and I’m blessed to be able to have a love affair with it.”
About 25 percent of Roney’s clients have sailboats, including Bob Gerhard, whose 46-footer, The Rebecca Ann , she spiffed up this year. There are new off-white cushions in the main cabin, curtains on the sides and carpeting to deaden the sound of the engines.
“The cover of the chart table chair was heavily stained, so she made it naugahyde, which is easier to clean,” says Gerhard, 72, a retired attorney from Philadelphia who summers at Solomons Island. “Now, when you’re below deck, you might as well be in a house.”
But even that’s not good enough for Paul Hannum, captain of the CynderElla, an opulent 100-foot yacht out of Annapolis that has four staterooms, mirrored ceilings, private heads, big-screen TVs throughout and a full galley with its own master chef.
“When people board this boat, we want them to feel they’re walking into the lobby of the Ritz rather than the Holiday Inn Express,” says Hannum. He runs the charter vessel with its crew of five for owner Alan Meltzer, an insurance guru in Bethesda — and Hannum leans on Roney and Meltzer’s wife, Amy, to bedeck the boat, from linens to furniture to artwork.
“A lot of boat ownership revolves around ego, and you get a sense of pride and accomplishment when people turn, look, and appreciate what you’ve done,” says Hannum, 50, of Germantown. “For 10 years, Christine has been a huge asset to our team. I don’t lose sleep at night about decorating because I know I’ve got her in my hip pocket.”

Best questions to ask a decorator contractor, how much do i have to give as a deposit.
Some companies may require a 10% deposit, some may not require any. For larger projects, you'll almost always need to give a deposit, and it's good to ask how much the deposit will be before going forward with a project. The Annapolis contractor will know how much they need for a deposit when they've given you the estimate, so ask early.
Are you insured and/or bonded for Decorators and Designers?
You'll certainly want to ask them this. Steer clear of any company that is not insured in Maryland , because that means that any incidental damage they may do on your property will be a real hassle to recover compensation for. It is never wise to work with uninsured tradesmen of any kind. Most states also require that someone have insurance in order to be issued a trade license. If they say they're licensed but not insured, they're being less than truthful.
Do you work with subcontractors?
The question is great for some industries and non-applicable for others. A general contractor, for example, will by definition employ subcontractors. Most Annapolis Decorators and Designers companies do not, but there are exceptions. You should always ask this question to your service providers. If they do use subcontractors, ask if they're all licensed and insured independently.
What is your projected timeline for the Decorators and Designers project in Annapolis?
Though a standard question, it's important to ask. Most contractors will tell you how long they expect the job to take without you asking. If they don't volunteer that information, be sure to ask. It's also helpful to ask if that's a hard finish date , meaning that it's the definite finish date. If it's a soft finish date, it may be extended for any number of reasons.

Absolutely the best interior company on the east coast. They handle everything and their pricing is very competitive. Thanks for maximizing our storage!
Christine… just a note to say “Thank you” for helping us obtain some fabric for our little improvement. And to let you know how blessed we continue to be with the work you did for us in 2008. It has all held up beautifully and we continue to cruise extensively, happy in our abode! If we buy another boat you will hear from us!
As a fishing charter, our upholstery often gets damaged from customer use. Y.I.O.A. meet us at the doc, removes damaged pieces, fix them and re-installs. Top notch service every time. We won’t go anywhere else!
We pulled into the bay from New Jersey and were in need of new bedding and blinds. Word of mouth lead us to Yacht Interiors Of Annapolis and we could not be more pleased with their work!
